Updated Vodafone NL Carrier settings
Update: the ipcc has been updated to work on iPhoneOS 3.1.3. It should still work on 3.0, too.
With the new 3.0 iPhoneOS a new carrier bundle is needed so as to enable a few new features. So I’ve uploaded a new Vodafone NL Carrier bundle, in IPCC format. Because this is the format Apple uses for their carrier updates, a jailbroken phone is not needed.
Simply download the IPCC, here, and put it on your desktop. Download that file such that it does not get processed after the download finishes. In Safari this can be accomplished by option-clicking the link. Note: IPCC files are really renamed zip files. Browsers try to be clever so the file might be renamed to end in .zip or .ipcc.zip. Make sure the file name ends in .ipcc or iTunes won’t recognise it.
You’ll need iTunes 8.2 with carrier testing enabled. On a Mac, this is done by typing:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
in a Terminal window, and restarting iTunes. Then, connect your phone to your computer, option-click the ‘Check for Update’ button and select the ipcc file. It should apply immediately.
This IPCC file does the following:
- Sets a carrier logo to eliminate scrolling ‘Voda…’
- Disables ‘call forwarded’ notification when calling
- Enables editing of data settings (APN, etc.)
- Enables internet tethering
- Enables MMS (settings preinserted)
Note: I had to restart my phone to get the MMS settings recognised.
After hitting ‘Check for Update’ I ‘m not able to select a file, I just get a message tellling me my software is up to date.
Is this because of my Itunes is not ‘carrier testing enabled’?
On a Mac, you need to hold the option key while clicking the button, then it’ll ask you for a file. You also need to tell iTunes to enable carrier testing or the only files it will accept are full software updates (ipsw files).
For windows, the instructions can be found here: http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/06/how-to-enable-carrier-bundle-support-in-itunes-82-in-mac-windows/
Thanks,
Got it working, even I’m a Mac-noob. (discovered the function of the option key and the Terminal window :D)
Just a Thanks note.
I to hate t-mobile, and thanks for updating this to 3.0 so quickly.
Cheers
-Olly
I seem to have everything working but i still get the message to enable tethering for this account contact vodafone NL the original message in dutch is Om tethering voor deze account in te schakelen, neemt u contact op met Vodafone NL Any tips?
Hm, not really. Vodafone doesn’t, so far as I know, have a way of signalling to iPhones that tethering should be disabled. I know of at least three iPhones on which this method works without a hiccup (mine, dad’s, sister’s.) Have you simply tried restarting the phone and trying again? What kind of plan are you on? Regular SIM-Only? Super SIM-Only? Something else?
It’s even worse now it says mobile datanetwork activation is not possible: U hebt geen abonnement op een mobiele dataservice. Can you help me out?
The only thing I can think of is you’re on a plan that doesn’t give you access to the ‘live.vodafone.com’ APN. Perhaps you’re on a business plan and you need ‘office.vodafone.nl’?
I Have an Italian never locked IPhone on a vodafone super sim 70 with “unlimited internet”
That’s exactly the same as my dad and sister have. Check in the Cellular Data Network settings (Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network) if the APN is listed as ‘live.vodafone.com’ with username/passord ‘vodafone’. This is what the ipcc sets, but you may have something overriding that.
Bingo! i changed it from vodafone.web.nl to live.vodafone.com thnx i did this to mms and visual voicemail to so thnx man
Coolio.
the web.vodafone.nl APN is set by a mobileconfig profile that has this wrong, obviously. You should remove that profile under settings -> general -> profiles.
Hi, thanks very much it works so well, even the tethering!!!
It’s interesting that Voda NL sell a “SuperSim” for the iPhone but their Klantenservice can’t tell you even how to setup MMS :)
Just one thing I can’t find a Vodafone NL carrier bundle file, so where does the ipcc file put the bundle settings please. Being paranoid I back up everything!!!
Regards
Rob
The bundle is inside the ipcc file, which is basically a zip with a certain structure and a different file extension. Before, I simply distributed the bundle and you had to place it on the phone manually including the right symlinks. It also required a jailbroken phone.
With iTunes 8.2 that is no longer necessary as it can now, with the carrier-testing bit enabled, put ipcc files on the phone on request (before it only did this for apple’s update mechanism). If you need to know where it goes on the phone, read my previous post.
Hi,
I’ve looked on the filesystem under the directory
System/Library/Carrier Bundles
There are many files there for other carriers and other Vodafone countries but none for Vodafone_nl
There is also no Symlink in the same directory, pointing to the bundle, called “20404″
Or do ipcc file contents go somewhere else? Or has it overwritten the Unknown.bundle file?
It might be under /Library? I don’t know if anything changed in 3.0– I haven’t jailbroken my phone since because really I originally only did it for the carrier settings.
Are you sure it applied? Do you have ‘Voda NL’ in the menu bar now?
It applied perfectly I have the logo, that damm popup is gone and the sms settings came through perfectly along with tethering…
Never mind I guess I can ssh on the command line and use find, might take a while but hey…
Anyway thanks it’s a really good improvement..
Found it…
Just for anyone else’s information:
SSH as root from a terminal onto your iphone
enter ipaddress of your phone instead of ? marks
ssh root@???.???.1.??
You’ll get asked for the password default = alpine
cd /
Be careful this takes you to the root level in your iphone filesystem. Paste this command into the prompt.
find . -name “Vodafone_nl.bundle” -print
You should get something like this if the file is installed.
./private/var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/Vodafone_nl.bundle
Tesoro3G:/ root#
Cheers
Rob
Thanks, Marijn
Hi
I am trying to load the IPCC file onto my iphone. Problem is that in iTunes there is no Check Updates button. Under iTunes menu there is “Check for Updates” but if I option click this then it checks for updates for iTunes and then the phone and wants to install 3.01 for the iphone. It doesn’t offer me the option to install the IPCC file.
I ran the command in the terminal window. Do I have to login as something or do I just open the terminal window paste the command in and hit enter?
Thanks
Ed
You have to click on your iPhone in the iTunes window first, so you get the bits of info about what it’s called, how much storage is used, etc. That part has a ‘Check for Update’ button. Also after running the terminal command, restart iTunes.
Hi Marco
I did restart iTunes. The problem is when I select the iPhone and look at the Summary page there is no ‘Check for Update’ button. Instead there is an Update button to download and install 3.01.
Can the old method of installing the bundle manually still be used that you detailed in your other post?
Interesting. Do you have the newest iTunes? That update button should be alt-clickable to make it install a selectable file.
The old method will work too, yes. It’s a bit more involved though and requires jailbreaking.
I have version 8.2.1
I haven’t tried option clicking the ‘Update’ button because I didn’t want it installing version 3.01 on the iphone.
Do I have to option click the ‘Update’ button then?
Problem solved. I just option clicked the ‘Update’ button and it asked me where the file was.
Thanks for your help.
Ed
Hi Marco,
Have you managed to get visual voicemail working on your iphone with vodafone NL.
Cheers
Ed
Can’t be done. Visual Voicemail requires support in the carrier’s network. Vodafone doesn’t have this.
Pity because I now they’ve rolled it out to at least Australia and New Zealand, Italy and one other state are going to be getting it. Let’s just hope Vodafone in the other countries aren’t far behind.
Ed
Greetings Marco,
I followed the clear instructions. Everything went well - now have “VodaNL”, etc. I still dont have teathering options in the Settings (sub)menus. MMS is configuraed and working (was before the IPCC install). I’ve read the comments but nobody else seems to have the same thing. I’ve got a IT iPhone on 3.1. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong? PS. I also have a private (”live”) subscription. PPS. Restarted the damn thing a/ 20 times already too!
ANY help/tips would be greatly appreciated - I what to connect my MacAir thru bluetooth to iPhone and use Internet.
Cheers,
-Warren.
Much appreciated, thanks!
Hello Marco,
I got the same as Warren, alle seems to work except for the Tethering part :(
I got a Belgium iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 and just below the Version is says Carrier: Vodafone NK 2.1 whats that about???
No extra profile but as I read that was not the case, right?
Gert
Hi,
3.1.2 doesn’t allow tethering at all unless the carrier does so, or you’ve hacked your phone :/ I still run 3.0 for this exact reason.
Hi Marco, wow your fast, I just came back to write exactly that as I was reading about it on others sites, that Apple is signing these settings nowadays :(
I did hack my old 2G all the time (to keep it alive with newer software versions) but now having an official unlocked 3GS it hurts to jailbreak it :)
Thanks for the work though and writting about it, Gert
P.s. volgens mij loopt je server nog op zomertijd :)

Yup this works. Upgraded to 3.1.3 and lost my tethering. Then ran this upgrade which is pretty simple and now I have my tethering back… oh yes I like that. This saves me about 10 euro per month on a data only mobile dongle. Thanks.
Hmm weird.. I ran the iTunes-command as a root user in my Terminal. After that i restarted iTunes and tried to select the ipcc-file, but it’s gray’d out (unselectable). ..anyone?
Thanks everyone and specifically Marco, Rob and Gijs. All your comments were a lot of help. I have a normal Vodafone subscription and tethering over USB now works like a dream. Lots of trouble with Bluetooth between my MacBook Air and iPhone 3G. Never get it to work.
BTW: most of the IPCC-files for Vodafone NL are wrong. The APN for a normal subscription should be “live.vodafone.com” with username “vodafone” and password “vodafone”.
Kind regards, BJ.
Steve, are you sure you downloaded the IPCC-file without processing? Press the option key while clicking on the download link. Make sure the file ends with a single .ipcc extension. If the file ends with .zip it has been processed and deleting the .zip extension won’t help. Don’t forget to manually change the APN-settings on your iPhone after you have installed the IPCC-file. See my previous comment. Good luck.
Berend Jan: my IPCC files, save for the Zakelijk one, contain that APN with that login and password, as seen below:
<key>apn</key> <string>live.vodafone.com</string> <key>username</key> <string>vodafone</string> <key>password</key> <string>vodafone</string>
