I’ve just had, for the first time ever, a computer call me and tell me that I’ve won a free caribbean cruise. While I was watching an episode of Coupling. How rude. Usually I at least get a person talking to me. Anyway, the message went something like this:
Congratulations! You’ve won a free caribbean cruise. To reclaim your prize, press 9. That’s the nine-key on your telephone.
In English, yes. Note that I live in the Netherlands. I wonder if they were calling from the US. If so, I suppose I should have just let the thing talk while I continued watching television. Unfortunately I only thought of that after hanging up immediately.
Hehe, yeah, I know those calls.
If you had pressed 9, you would have been told to claim your prize by calling some expensive “0906″ number, which, of course, won’t get you your Carribean cruise ;)
Same thing happened to me at 5 o’clock in the morning. I was asleep at the time the computer called me. When it told me to press 9 I hang up. When I woke up I thougth it was a weird dream. I’m also from the Netherlands.
I had the same problem a few days ago. I thought I’d better hang up instead of pressing 9 ;-), and so i did.
Just heard on the news that it’s someone from Limburg (a part of the Netherlands) who’s trying to get one’s money. The police believe that so far 8 people have fallen for it; having paid 800 euro’s each.
Fun… right?

Hoi,
Hi!
I’m getting a creepy feeling here…
I live in Sweden and just recieved the exact same call about 40 minutes ago….. And being a curious person, I took a chance and pressed 9.
After this the woman said that I would be transferred and that they would pay for the call. She said that someone would be with me momentarily but all I heard was a couple of switching noises… nothing more.
After a couple of minutes I hung up.
Some people would say that I’m “asking for punishment”, but I’m thinking that they shouldn’t be able to charge me for anything, when they call me and I don’t call them back or anything.
I tried to call my phone company to have them check out who called me, but they were closed. I’ll call them first thing in the morning and write again, if I hear something interesting.
Man… 800euro is a lot of dough! I’m going to cry if my curiousity has cost me that kind of money.
hahaha
this morning i got one of those calls.
the phone rang ang rang.. and finally i picked the phone up and answered (kind of angry)hello!?
and i heard:
Congratulations! Youve won a free caribbean cruise. To reclaim your prize, press 9. Thats the nine-key on your telephone.
(a smooth female voice)
i just got quiet…
and then i heard:
To reclaim your prize, press 9. Thats the nine-key on your teleph….(i hung up and went back to sleep)
I got this phonecall on friday 12 of august
All I did was to hang up the phone
I have spoken to many others I know and they have also get that phonecall
Just got the same call here in Denmark and hung up without hitting the 9.
I just got the same call. Annoying. Does anybody know where they get their phone numbers from?
Just got it too, here in Sweden, I wonder what register they use….
Hi,
I’ve also just got this call and I was just as curious as Henrik. At the moment I’m curious to read what he was going to tell in his second comment, i.e. what happened after contacting phone company?
Hi
I from Denmark and got the same call to day, and I am allso a curious person. I push the button 9 and the person said I would be transferred and after some secons there was a click and after that, I got the same tone you get when you pick up the phone when you want to make a call. I hang up :-) .
I do not think we have to be worried as long we did not made any call as descrisbed in response 1.
I think they have got hands on a danish telephone book now. I just got the call today and pressed 9 with same response as Henrik and Anders.
Telefoni spam
Fagre nye lorteverden…
Den 25. august kl. 20:05 modtog min telefonsvarer et opkald anonymt. En besked blev afspillet indeholdene oplysninger om at jeg har vundet en cruise tur i Caribien. Jeg skulle bare lige ringe p et telefonnummer.
Joh, joh!…
Hi, I’m from Denmark and the same thing happened to me last night. However, luckily I didn’t press nine..
Got the same call! The computer does call from England, phone nr: +44972490000. If someone feels like calling back…
Same thing is happening in the Netherlands. They’ve been active since beginning of August 2005.
I’ve heard it mentionened that this will be the next thing: spam by telephone. Anyone has a good name for this? Can-spam? spokenspam?

Visit my website: http://www.oosterhagen.net
…and today it was my turn to get the call. I never pressed the nine. It’s a pretty creepy thing though…
I got the same call just a minute ago (for the second time). I thought it better to wait for some time without hitting the 9. to hear what happens if you do not do anything. After 6 times telling me to hit 9 the connection was closed. This time, it cost them money I suppose, because they were calling from the USA: +19724900000. Probably a fake number because it looks like the number Nelly is talking about!
I got the call a few minutes a go en though “It’s to good to be true!” and it was. I was talking to the lady who wants to know in which country I live in and then ask me for my name…it toke me a while to tell her how you write my name. After that she’d ask me: “You are 23 years old or older?” and I told her that I’m 20 years old. She said: “ok, that also good” Very strange and then the connection was broken. No cruise! :(
I just got the exact same phone call and im in australia, and its like to claim your prize please press 0158121…… a whole heap of numbers, i was like wtf? SCAM!
I got that exact phone call yesterday and I’m in Sweden
ok i found out more about it, if you do actually press or ring the number, it gives this computer access to your phoneline and cant stop it
Hey im from Australia, on the south coast… we left the call to the answering machine, we now have this number about 16 digits long to call and claim our prize… , naturally we havent rung it yet as thats not the best idea will probably end up giving it to the police or something.
OOSTERHAGEN… mate theres already a name for telephone spam.. its called telemarketers… (soz if anyone who reads this is a Telemarketer) but JEEZ! get a grip and stop calling in the middle of my bloody dinner!
I live in Switzerland and I’ve got the call today at 17:23. Fortunately I was not home, just saw it in the phone log :-) Seems to be modern form of SPAM, surely a money generator…
Second call in Switzerland.. We’ve seen it on our phone log too…
we’ve recived the call at 15:32 (it only rang about 3 times..)
Got this strange number also and live in sweden ..
was not at home when it called me up so did this websearch on it…have a clue from where they got it.. the day before i entered my phone number on http://www.xgbox.com/ for a contest for a free pc case this is the only and first time i enter my phone number on the net anyone knowing they did the same ????
Laffe scam.
I feel stupid, but I just got home and was making dinner. I got the call with an English female voice, telling me how I had won some cruise to the Caribbean and could I please press ‘9′. Yeah, sure, whatever, bitch. However, I didn’t even cross my mind tht you could actually be charged for simply pressing ‘9′. My call got transfered, and an English speaking guy picked up, saying something alone the lines of, “Caribbean prize claim office, ……”. The line was terrible. I said: “Why have you called?” He then answered with, “Why have I called?” Then he proceeded to hang up, or put me on hold perhaps, because the line was not broken. I then hung up myself.
Not sure if I could be charged after reading this, I called my phone company (UPC VoIP, Netherlands). They told me that, as they called me and I did not dial out myself, they thought that I could not be charged. It would seem rediculous if this was possible, but I’m still cautious. Hopefully I’ve put some minds to rest, but the people at UPC had not heard about this scam before, so they might just not know about how it works.
I promise you, I won’t be paying if this is presented to me on my bill.
i had the same 2day. i pressed 9 unfortunately and the line hang up. hope ntg bad happened..will post another comment if i notice anything weird in my phone bill.
cheers
I was called at 19:45 today (Denmark). The woman repeated her crap three times whereafter the line was broken. One rarely gets anything for free, and this seemed just a bit too weird for me…
I also got the ‘press 9′ call. I got - well maybe angry - and pressed 9 and said immediately to a guy in the other end. ‘I just received a fake offer about a carribian tour. I must inform you that this kind of cheat is illegal according to danish law, and you could be …’ Then the guy in the other suddenly started shouting very angry ‘SHUT UP’, ‘SHUT UP’, ‘SHUT UP’ very loud. He was still shouting ‘SHUT UP’ again and again when I hang up the phone. Quite scaring experience, but I’m glad I answered this phone call, though it took me some time afterwards to calm down and stop shaking. What a criminal! I don’t fear any kind of charge from my phone company - else I’m gonna take some serious discussions with them. Best regards from Denmark. /Jens
ENGLISH: Just received the ‘Cruise’ phonecall in the Netherlands. Didn’t press 9 and I hung up. Weird thing!
ENGLISH: The computer asks you to press a number because this confirms that a person (and not for instance a fax machine) is listening. There is a chance that they save your phone number for commercial purposes.
I just got the same phonecall. I didn’t trust it too much so I called the phonecompany to check if they could tell me some more about it. Apparently it’s some company who calls you. If you dial 9 as they ask you to, they connect you throug to a very pricy number and ask you to tell them youre name and bank-acount. Then they make a withdrawel and there’s nothing much you or youre phonecompany can do about it. If you dial the 9 and then hang up, there’s no harm done.
Best thing to do is just hang up immedialty though.
The next thing the phonecompany (it was KPN, for the people who live in The Netherlands) asked me to do is to warn all my friends and family so the company will be less succesfull in the future.
I’ve had 4 calls in the last 10 weeks. I live in Ireland. The last two I let run until they hung up - as long as I don’t hit any number buttons it costs them money.
I live in Sydney (Australia) and got this call yesterday morning. I too was immediately disbelieving and hung up without pressing “9″.
I live in Ireland, and have had 3 over the last 4 months. I just hang-up, I can’t stand spammers/phishers/conmen/telemarketers.
I got a call 15 minutes ago about this carrbbean cruise and pressed “9″. I got to speak with a man who asked if i recently got a call from them and then which country i live in. I answered Sweden and than he hung up. Anyone who has gotten any consequences or bills after these calls?
I got this call right now and i just hung up.
Not THAT curious am i…
Does anyone know what it really is?
Got it 55 secs ago, just did a quick search on google and ended up here. I live in sweden btw.
Same thing here, just got the call here in Sweden, googled for it and found this site.
Just got hit too! +46-31 area, Sweden Gothenburg. Long live the fish, death to the phishers!
I just got in on both on our phoner weird huh?
//Stockholm Sweden
Bloody Hell,
I got one too, five minutes ago..
I want to kill someone, but who called me???
Pretty frustrating.
Got this call for some minutes ago, sounded to good to be true.. so faked, So I did hang up of course.
/Sweden
I got the same call here as well in Ireland three times over the past few weeks. I recently called Eircom and asked to have our number restricted from unsolicited callers, yet I am still getting this particular call. :-(
As others mentioned above, the call asks me to press 9, however I just hang up instead. The first two times I received the call, the number came up as ‘Withheld’ on the caller ID, however this time I got a number and when I Googled it, I arrived here. The number I got this time is a US number: 0019724900000
I just listened to my answering machine and I got a message about winning a cruise. It sounded so much like a scam so i goggled it and found out this site. In the message they ask me to call this number:
?3001 407 830 0147
/Sweden
Got this call right now in Sweden. Scam’s been mentioned in media before so I hung up at once. Think those responsible probably some no good pieces of shit who spend the rest of their days trying to find ways to disrespect people for their own financial good. Me thinking the world would be better off would they be chopped into tiny pieces and their remains pissed on for good measure.
One wonders how they select the numbers to call, by some sort of open sampling or by knowing or unknowing referal.
fan.. I pressed nine..
I just got a call with the same message. I just hung up, like Madonna. :)
/ Mats
Hi - I got this call today in Stockholm, Sweden.
I did not dial the nine, but I must admit it was tempting just to see what would have happened…
HANG UP!
Just received this strange phone call.
(I live in Copenhagen, Denmark)
When after the initial statement I heard nothing for 3 or 4 seconds, I simply hung up.
Then I simply asked Google “won free cruise caribbean scam” and found this list.
I have seen quite a few “You won this or that lottory” messages in my e-mail.
I just do not believe in winning anything, I did not participate in.
I will now spead a warning on various sites around here!
Hello folks, they aren now sacnning numbers in Sweden. I have two numbers 8070 digits apart. Calls came in within 3 minutes….. You can imagine how many people are beeing harassed. It is obvious taht they try to get money out of your calls. The trick today to make millions is MULTIPLE small action via computer and phone. It is advisable to contact your phone company for information. The action is illegal, but cannot at date be prosecuted. You are likely not to see much on your phone bill- but, again- many little streams…
Another thing- they might have gotten your phone no. from your website?? Let us know.
C. in Sweden
in Sweden we can lock our line against sales calls. Itn is called NIX. Look it up on the web. C.
Just got this call in Sweden. I knew right away it was a phoney or prank call done by friends so I pressed the “1″ button, and then there was just a “click” and silence. F***ing bastards! :)

Hello. The same hapened to me 10 min. ago here in Denmark. I waited and did not press 9. Within 30 seconds after the repeatingly reminded me: “Press 9 to claim your price” the call ended. How lucky the internet has the answer to why an experience like this occur. I am not looking forward to more in the future - one might fear that the telephone is the new target for spam.
Today it reached Norway as well. I hung up before pressing nine and made a search on Google which led me to this site which convinced me it was a scam.
Got the call 5 min ago.. I couldn’t resist. Im so weak. I had to press 9.. just had to.. DAMN.
I live in stockholm sweden.
Thank god for google.
Have now received this call both at home, and at my girlfriend’s house as well…in Australia!
Hey all, I just got this call a few minutes ago.
I’m in Australia (in the bush, middle of nowhere). Caller I.D said that the number calling was “Out of Area”, which usually means from another country. I called a girlfriend and she’d gotten the same call, seconds before I did. We both hung up, I googled the phrase “won free carribean cruise dial 9″ and ended up here. Bizarre. Wonder how many people have been scammed for money…?
also got the call som minutes ago. i live in lund, sweden.
i just strted laughing when i heard the voidce - i thought someone was making a phrank call.
can’t belive anyone would fall for this. to me it was a joke…. :)
I was sitting and watched som tv and the phone rang, i answered and there it was, first i thought that my brother was playing with me. I didnt press nine. After I searched at google on “Press 9 to claim your price” then i came here. Now i have to tell my friends that it is not good to press nine.
Just received the weird call, did not press 9. Took a look at cyberhq by means of Google. You can also find information on the website of the Consumentenbond (NL) about it (forum): http://www.consumentenbond.nl/forum/ printthread.php?t=292&page=2&pp=20
I’m from the Netherlands too, and received this call tonight. I just listened the tape, and did nothing. After 55 seconds, and three times the message “press nine” they hung up. In this way, they have maximum costs and no results. Later I called back, and became a voice who said that the number was invalid.
When my wife came back I told her the story. She was at the home of a friend of ours, and they received the same call, nearly at the same moment in the same region. They pressed nine, and were connected to a guy who asked for a creditcardnumber… They hung up.
I think you must be really stupid to believe these shit….
It looks like they have their working area in the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Australia…
Strange… A big change for people speaking English, but nor England or the States…
Hi!
I live in Norway and got the same phonecall some days ago. Mom and da was not home, and I didn’t know whether they had won or not, byt since the company did not present themselves, I hang up. I thought that a person, and not that tape would have called if they were serious. And if what she said actually was true, no one but me would know:)
Im from norway too, and I got this call yesterday. Thought, this must be someone I know thats trying to fool me and hung up… Well… someone tried to fool me allright.. :P
For 1 hour ago I recceived this strange call, just curios about why they just chose to call me. What do we who got this call have in common, except from the countires we are from, I’m from sweden(!). Are they calling a number and hope some will answear or do they actually know who will answear?…
I got the same message (just 5 minutes ago). After her story i hung up. Didn’t believe the story and checked the internet and found this site. I live in the eastern part of the Netherlands. For the people who are interested the telephone number was 009724900000. I wouldn’t encourage people to call, maybe it costs a lot of money.
I just had this call ten minutes ago. (Holland) I hung up, because I didn’t trust it. It’s really a sad way of making money outoff other people’s good faith… I’m not much a believer, so they had the wrong one. If “they” read this: you’re all loosers… just like your parents. I live in a big house and I just laugh about you… poor m#therF@#?ers!
About half an hour my dad got this call, and like 5 minutes ago I did too.. Very strange it is!
Hi! I got the call 5 min ago. Fortunately I didn’t press 9 and googled for the number instead. It seems that they try their buiz in Switzerland now, since 2 other guys got the same call lately.
I was called in Holland with a secret phone number, so I was very surprised to be called at all. I hit this site while still on the phone, to see what the experience of others was. Didn’t hit the 9, the right choice!
Hi I’m from Switzerland and was called on tuesday 3rd of january. I was speechless at first, then I pressed the 9 but then the “woman-voice” just kept on saying: you will be tansferred…and I should remember the keyword “cruise”. then I hung up. but soon after I was still thinking about this call and I dialled the number and called back, there it said, “this is not a working number…”. Now I’m afraid this is gonna cost a lot, and only because I’m curious too! what do you think? and who is this anyway?
Just got the call in Sydney, Australia. Pressed 9 out of curiosity (before I found this site obviously!), heard something about transferring the call and the word ‘charge’ and hung up. Has anyone who pressed 9 received their phone bill since - did you get charged?
6th jan switzerland
same as all above, good to have this site.
best to ignore and advice friends and relatives.
not one cent should be spent on criminals
Confirm CH is on target now, was already in a conversation on my landline and the GSM rang.
mobile was in the other room and it took me too long to walk and take the call on it… all I saw is the +19724900000 in the missed call so I didn’t had the pleasure to be the lucky winner and hear the teaser about the so called “cruise”.
I called back the number and I had a voice saying the number was invalid.
But that was not the swiss phonesystem standard “invalid number” message with the swiss german accent but really an US one.
I’m currious to hear the message, if someone taped it (digitally I mean, I was born after the first oil crisis and didn’t mean “analog magnetic tape” which were already middle-age when I grew up).
I just post here for more google attraction on this page although people accessing either :
-> already got crooked
or
-> were strong enough not to press 9
or
-> simply like me are swiss, synonym of being slow, too slow to be able to take the call
Switzerland here. Got the phone call at a friend the 6th, and today the 7th at my place. caller ID: 0019724900000
Just a comment for people who do not hang up straigh thinking this might cost them money:
Some VOIP phone providers provide free PC-to-telephone calls to some countries, among them Switzerland and the US. I won’t publish the URL here as I don’t wanna look like I’m using the forum to place an add… And anyway if they can forge the callerID, I’m afraid they probably don’t even pay for the call! Don’t bother, just hang up the damn phone…
Geneva, Switzerland
I’ve got the message on my answering machine on 7.Jan.06. I was already dreaming of cocktails and bikinis, but thought to find out about it on the internet first, before I call 001 407 830 0147. You guys all convinced me not to call them….
zh switzerland
just got the same call from “Unknown” instead of the usual “withheld” 3 weeks ago.
pressed 9.
nand then spoke to a lady (on the bad line), Jane was her name, from “Best USA Vacation”.
I hade to answer a few harmless questions and finally got an email confirming, that i can go on a trip to florida with 4people within the next year. the trip includes hotel, Disneyland and a cruise to a caribean island.
the email is serious with address and phone nr. it was because I had entered a drawal on a cheap webpage..
i’m takig of with to friends on the 20th of january. and we just got the tickets today! (that’s for the plane, british arways, the disneyworld and the cruise ship on FIRST CLASS!)
well then.. pity you, who hung up!

non capisco cos^è….
Norway here.
Got a call from 004419724900000 today, didn’t even answer… checked the number and ended up here. It is really sad that they can’t stop this scam, first post here was 25 jul 2005 and still they havn’t found a way to stop them… pathetic!
I’m from Sweden, got the call 10 minutes ago.
I hung up!
Called norway yesterday, saw the crazy number and didnt bother to pick it up… ended up here now… but i’m curios if any of you has been charged?
Switzerland receiving you loud and clear, 0019724900000 - you’re a computer telling me I’ve won a cruise.
Smells too good to be true? That’s because it is!
I could not even be bothered to press 9; only retards would fall for this, surely?
They called me in Linköping Sweden, 10 minutes ago at 19:44 CET. Really weird? I’m going to send an e-mail to the news-paper here to see If they start digging into this and find out something about it.
Sweden, just got this phonecall 5 mins ago, did not press 9 just hanged up..Which turned out to be a good thing i guess..
Sweden, just got one a few mins ago, hung up when they said 9, then i searched internet and found this site, lol
Sweden, got the same call just a few minutes ago, hung up, made a quick search and found this site…
Hello people.. i just caled the police and they told me that there shoud be nothing to fear if i not gave them my credit numbers that ofcourse i not DID!
so i hope that i not have to pay 400€ on nex bill!
Keep it real/ Nicolas
Just got the same call here switzerland and hung up without hitting the 9.
Very strange it is!
Yes, let me add to the list. Just got interrupted while watching the Bond-classic Thunderball on TV.
Bastards!
Yesterday around 21:30 they called me. Just like all you other an automated calling machine said
“Congratulations! Youve won a free caribbean cruise. To reclaim your prize, press 9. Thats the nine-key on your telephone.”
I did press 9. I must admit I was tempted. And that isthe interesting part of this. How can they get me on the hook? How many people do they get to give away credit card number, account nr or make a call?
After pressing 9 I was connected to a woman with lightly broken english. She started babbling about the carribean anda trip I won worth so and so and asked if I was interested.
Yes I’m interested.
She goes on: You will have to pay 20% yourself.
Are you a credit card holder?
Yes I am.
I need your credit card number besause the vacation has to be booked with it.
Of course I didnt give her the number. During the call I also asked what company she represented; Best USA vacations.
Asking how they got my number she answered; random selection by computer.
Thiefs on the phone “in my house”!
I checked with my telephone company and pressing 9 does not charge my bill.
Obviously they earn money on this so there must be people giving them credit card numbers I suppose. That is scary!
I’m from Denmark, Nordborg.
Got the same f#@*ing call at about 17:45, tuesday, 2006-01-17.
Instantly I knew that it was an attempt of fraud.
Hit the ‘9′ button and started talking danish to the poor girl. She didn’t understand and I got some guy (Philip) who asked if I had been to Barbados, Orlando aso. Suddenly the conversation stopped and I just put the speaker on and left the phone. About 10 minutes later another guy (John?) said some thinges. ½ hour later someone asked in a very anoid way “Did you press ‘9′?, DID YOU PRESS ‘9′!?”. Every now and then someone said some thinges. Several times I tried to get into a dialog (in english) with someone, but didn’t suceed. I told them to stop calling anyone in Denmark and I told them that I was NOT going to hang up, EVER, knowing that THEY would be charged with something overseas like 1 or 2 EURO pr minute? Had them going for about 3½ hours (THREE AND A HALF HOURS, that’s 210 minutes). Then my phone needed a recharge and unfortunately the line was hung up :o( In the meantime they heard my 6 year old son play fart-sounds from the PC, and also some real ones and they heard all of dr.dk/dolph ’svada-maskinen’ and they heard me take a dump aso.
THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT ABLE TO HANG UP!
DO NOT HANG UP! As long as you can keep it going they are paying a lot of dough! And they are not able to use the line or phone to harass other people. That’s why they get so annoyed when you don’t hang up.
You can not be charged in this case.
Lets stop these buttwipes by not hanging up! And thereby harass them instead.
Best regards, Heino
Yep… here in Brisbane, Australia and just got the same call - Googled it like everyone else :p
Luckily I managed to bring up this page while she was still offering it to me. phew!
Hi i recieved the call about 10 mins ago and i live in australia. The weird thing is that after i pressed nine, i tried to hang up and then picked up the phone again and the bloody thing was still connected. i had to disconnect my phone from the wall for 10 seconds until it disconnected
anyone who presses nine i strongly suggest you do the same or it will cost u buckets
I live in Dublin, Ireland. I just received this call about 10 minutes ago. I hung up. My motto is: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true. Call me a sceptic, but it’s generally good advice.
Hi, just writing to you all from the top deck of a large luxury cruisliner. Mmmmmmm so glad I pressed 9
Hi everyone! Guess who just got a call? To bad I did not press the “9″, would be funny to do like #97…
Sweden/Gothenburg
I just got that same call up here in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Just like post 102?
Isn’t there any way to track these calls?
Just got the same call 10 minutes ago in Gothenburg, Sweden. Hung up the phone before ’she’ even finished the first sentence.
Same here about 2 hrs ago, i just hang up!
I’m living in Sweden and just got the phonecall…Yay! Now I’m in the club too.
I got this phonecall about ten minutes ago. Unluckily i pressed nine, ‘cuz i thought it’s was some kind of joke, like something my friends would’ve ordered. but i hung up just one second after i pressed the ‘9-button’. hopefully that’s all there is, and nuthin more will happen.. I live in sweden by the way.. argh..
I just got the call in Australia. I pressed 9 and heard the free cruise story from an educated-sounding bloke with a slight accent (Indian?). He said I only had to pay $800 taxes, etc, but when he asked for my credit card I refused. He put me onto his manager - a bossy American bird who was really pushy and who eventually hung up on me.
I just got the same ugly call in Germany.
Hi, I live in Denmark and I got the call too, for about the fourth time… This time though I desided to do as #97 and press 9.
After a short introduction I pressed microphone mute on my phone and left the line open for about 1½ hour.
During this time I listened in on some of the conversations the sales reps. were having whith other callers. The details of this scam are below:
Company name: Best USA Vacations
Web site: http://www.bestusavacations.com
Price: 898 euros.
Duration 13 days 12 nights. 6 nights on a hotel in Orlando Florida, 3 nights at Daytona Beach and 2 nights on a cruiseship whith Nassau, Bahamas as destination.
Required age: 23 / 25 years.
They claim that you are one of the first 10 persons to respond to their automated call and thereby qualifying to a 75% discount on their normal rates.
THIS IS A SCAM NEVER GIVE THEM ANY CREDIT CARD INFORMATION!!!
They cannot disconnect the line, as it’s been inititated by their automated call, and as long as your keep them on the line (just leave the hook off) they cannot use that line to scam anyone else - not to mention that they have to pay overseas rates!
Lets scam the scammers :D
This message is for Phil
Majo from Lausanne
I received the same phone call from “Best USA vacation” She told me exactly the same she told you, that I have win a cruise in the caribeans.
Then she ask me for my credit card expire date, and my telephone number. I gave her my telephone nr but not my credit card expire date and than the line cuts. Do not tell me that I loose a Caribbian cruise???!!!
well i gues im not the only one who have recive that call… im from sweden..
Got it as well. Too bad I got surprised and hung up the phone without pressing 9…
However I found a swedish paper that gave them a taste of their own medicine by repetedly calling back, congratulating the salesperson with “Congratulations, you have won an all-inclusive trip to Åmål, the Swedish city, famous from the movie.”. More of that, please :o)

It happend to me this afternoon, I’m from Lausanne, Switzerland.
It happened just 10 minutes ago here in Lausanne, Switzerland. Just runned the machine and deleted the message.
Grrwrr! I HATE phonespam, especially when it’s in a foreign language and obviously not aimed at the local market (I’m Swedish). Those bl**dy Yanks (or whatever they may be; the voice calling was a younger American female) don’t give a b*gger about the Nix (do-not-call) registry and good marketing tradition. I hung up already after “caribb” (got the call at 15.23 this afternoon), and indeed I pity those who let themselves be ripped off by those moronic crooks!
okay, i’ve really gotta know if anybody got a bill from this? me and my sister pressed nine, but after a few seconds the one in the other end hung up… damn my dad’s gonna be furious if its a big bill!
my dad just called our phone company, and he didn’t even have to finish the entire sentence. apperantly they get a lot of those calls. they said you only pay if you leave your credit card numbre. phew! what a relief!
Hello again. I wrote #97. Got my phonebill the other day and I wasn’t charged for the 3½ hour call. My mother got the call Friday and she also pressed 9 and then went to work. When she got home again 5 hours later she had to use the phone, so she hung up. (That’s my mother :o)
Once again I can only recommed that you press 9 and leave the phone for as long as you don’t need it.
If you are still not convinced that you will not be charged, please call your phone company or e-mail them and have them confirm that you will not be charged, so that you are prepared for the next call from these thiefes.
If you work at a phone company and read this I suggest that you announce in public that your customers will not be charged.
Best regards, Heino
It happened to me just 5 minutes ago here in Lugano, Switzerland. let the phone ring.
In the last days lots of friend had the same call. thanks to all for prev. comments.
take care Paolo
Just got the call 3 min ago .. i live in sweden.. pressed the 9 and nothing but static and like faint modem sounds.. strange stuff.. i got a secure telphon number that can’t even be found in the telephonbook .. i’m guessing it’s calling at randome ..
Heino, I really want you to post your fart sounds so that people can download them and play them to the reps in an internet version of a Class A$$hole Lawsuit ;)
I too got the call just a minute ago! Pressed 9 but the hung up. This is in Sweden on an unlisted number. Do you think they go on your IP- addess? as I have broadband through the phone?
I get really freeked out about this stuf..
Just want to tell you, that even if you are a member of NIX doesn’t make you secured from this scam!!! I live in sweden, and is a member of NIX, and guess what??? THEY JUST CALLED ME!!! =)
Dear All,
I wish I would have done my homework while on the phone with these persons. I live in Zurich Switzerland and got the call 3 days ago. Dave Johnson from bestusavacations.com informed me that he had obtained my name from a database of credit card users who have used their card in Florida, (we do travel to Florida and I hold a gold visa so I thought it was legitimate). Dave announced that I (along with 25 other persons from each European country) have won a 2-week vacation in 5 star luxury resorts in Orlando, Daytona and Ft Lauderdale, as well as a 3-day cruise to the Bahamas. I went on their website while he was making his pitch and it looked respectable. Said that they wanted “Word of mouth” advertising from Europeans who travel in Florida. After 1 hour of writing down details and visiting the site, he asked me to secure the package using my Visa for the taxes which amount to 800 USD. Having looked into this type of trip before, I knew this was a good deal, but was very wary about giving my card details. He assured me that they would not debit my card until I had signed the travel documents which would arrive by post within 10 days. AND that I had 1 full year to travel and could book my trip at any time with their customer service people. Stupidly, I did it. Then spent the next hour on the Disney website with my little boy deciding what attractions we wanted to visit. After having second thoughts I got more information on Boakes.org and realised I had been scammed into a Timeshare trick. Apparently, the resorts you are promised are NEVER available, and many persons give up while trying to block the dates. IF you do manage to get something, chances are you are forced to stay in sleezy Timeshare appartments where they try to sell you their scheme during your stay. I immediately phoned my card company and had them block the payment and report the incident to their fraud department. Since I am insured for this, I am lucky. IT’s not the case with everyone.
Hello everybody
I got the call 2 days ago. I have left my full details with them and was waiting for the documentation to arrive at my home. The deal was, that I had to confirm the offer within 30 days and only then I would be charged the 898 Euros.
Today I got a call from my credit card company’s security department. They apparently have installed a kind of filter that blocks any transactions from companies like bestusavacations. Up to now there was only a authorization request from bestusavacations to my credit card company, but not yet any transaction of monney. Strange is, that they split the amount into one request of 500 CHF and a second one of 800 CHF, which totals about the 898 Euros.
Here are some details about the phone call from bestusavacations:
During the call which took about 30 minutes I was twice transferred to another person. First to Matthew Downing, the manager and later to Ryan from the accounting department.
After the computer call I was welcomed by a female employee who explained the offer and then took my details. When she was asking my credit card details I asked her directly whether she personally would give her credit card details by phone. After some thinking she answered that she would not do so. Then she told me to stand by, as she had to call her superior. I wondered how quickly he arrived at the phone and how much he already knew from my talk with his female employee. Then he started to give me quite some details about the whole campaign. Overall he left a quite good impression in my view.
The reason behind the whole campaign beeing a series of cancellations of vacations in Florida after the huge number of huricans during last summer. Now they were trying to get the tourists back to Florida by inviting 250 people each in Sweden, Norway, the UK and apparently in Switzerland. (Matthew did not know that they were also calling to Switzerland.)
Now I am wondering about any bad experirences made by anybody that had been called. Above there are 127 comments, but nobody was really hurt, and only few did answer the call. There is only Phil beeing on Holiday just now who could give us more details.
I will now try to call the company next week and find out what exactely will be gooing on now, after my credit card company has decided not to transfer any monney to them.
There are no free lunches- stick to that!

Sweden, just got one a few mins ago, hung up when they said 9, then i searched internet and found this site, lol

I don’t know what to do now!!!
Is there a way for me to get my money back?
Just got a phonecall as well, from 0019724900000 … Since I don’t expect any calls in a while, I’m not gonna press the 9 and just leave the phone until they hang up.
Can’t be all that cheap for whoever they are to call here, might as well punch back.
I live in Kalmar, Sweden btw. Any swedes here who’s been in contact with Telia about this? Any suggestions from them?
/Rob
Hi every body,
just got the call (I’m in Denmark). Curious as I am I couldn´t resist pressing 9…. A woman then said hello, and then all I could hear was a lot of static noise as when you´re calling transatlantic. After about one minute I hung up not knowing that they would be charged for the time I kept the line buissy… I really regret hanging up so quickly - they really eserve to get their asses kicked those bloody bastards!
Then I phoned my phone company and they reassured me that i wouldn´t get charged for the call - so my advice is just to keep the line buissy for as long as possible!
The lady-computer voice sounded exactly the same as the voice on the Global One phone card used for internationel calls. I don´t know if there´s any connection. But I have used a Global One card for calling Canada and Japan last fall….

Hi,
I just got the same phone call as everyone else. I live in Switzerland. I informed our local police so that if anyone else calls about the scam they will know how to deal with it.
My mother had the same scam recently via a website ad. flashing and informing her that she had won the cruise. She was on the phone to the rep for nearly an hour but because they wanted her credit card information and would debit her card immediately she decided not to do it!
Let’s keep up the good work.
Charlie from Zürich, Switzerland
I got the phone call today as well, after they had told me to press 9 to “collect my prize” I did because I’ve had about 10 of these calls.
The guy who answered the call said “how are you doing” and I said “not very well as I’ve just run to pick this call and did he know how many times he has phoned this number”.
He then said “just give me your no. so we can remove it”. So I gave him my number and then he said “OK I’ll get it to ring you back every ten minutes have a nice day” and promptly hung up.
I feel like hanging him up at the moment.
Two days ago I was the lucky person to winn. After pressing “9″ I talked to a guy. First he confirmed my price. Next he asked me about my home country. I told him Denmark. Then he asked me about my name. I said: I won´t tell you. The guy turned totally crasy and said: Then fuck off. He hung up. But i didn´t. But after about 10-15 minutes my wife had to use the phone and I hung up. Hope soon to get a new call, so I can hold the call as long as possible to brake Heino´s Mothers record 5 hours. #121

please visit our website http://www.bestusavacations.com
We travel thousands of Western European customers annually. We pay for the call not the customer. We offer an 11 day 10 night promotional package in Florida.WE include a free cruise to the Bahamas for 3days and 2 nights.ALL meals and entertainment are included on board the ship.(the customer must pay port taxes and departure fees as they would on any cruise in the world)All charges are authorized on tape(as required by credit card companies).Frankly I am amazed by the juvenile, moronic and outright obscene comments and the level of paranoia. Also if you feel the need to break the record go ahead we don’t pay for that.Thank You Robert Keyes
Ich habe gestern auch so ein telefon bekommen, hier in der Schweiz kanto Zrich in Effretikon.Ich habe abgehngt und habe nicht die 9 gedrckt.
Mr Keyes,
We have a right to respond to your intrusive phone calls which we did not ask to receive anyway that we wish. You are on a client phishing expedition. At best your claim is false: we didn’t win anything, you are throwing in a cruise into a trip that we will have to pay for. Frankly I am sick and tired of having my privacy invaded by people trying to sell me things on the phone and I have the right to say that wherever I want! That doesn’t make me juvenile, moronic or obscene - paranoia? Sure, an automated message, being put through to someone in the US who doesn’t know my name, promises me a cruise and wants my credit card information over the phone? You bet I would be paranoid, I’d be a fool not to!
If you are a legitimate company (anyone can set up a website) I would seriously rethink your marketing strategy.
Peace,
Charlie
Hi everybody;I got just a call from this number but couldn’t open it before close. So after read your comments I’m happy that I didn’t catch it. I am from Switzerland.
Greets to all.
Matteo
Hi all
I am the scammer.
Please stop hold’in the lines when i call you with my caribbean-cruise scam.
It’s very annoying and I can’t use the line to lure money from other stupid people like yourself.
Worst regards from Scam man
This is obviously a joke.
Oh. Very funny lol.
I just got charged appr. 75.0 euro from my phone company after pressing the 9 key (live in denmark)
Seems as they are finally starting to bill the calls.
All of you who has pressed nine can expect a huge bill from your phone company and you cant do anything about it… MUHHAAAAAHAAA
the above is obviously also a joke (and a bad one of that)
I just got exactly the same call….didnt press the number….I live in Switzerland
Hi everybody
I’m from Switzerland and I received the same phone call yesterday. The call obviously came from England (+44-972-490-0000). I pressed the 9-button, but nobody answered. After two minutes, I hung up. I wanted to call them back, but it didn’t work (”This number is invalid”). My research on google ended on this page.
I’m from Switzerland, too and my wife got the same phone call on March 9th. Unfortunately she gave the credit card number but she insisted that she wants everything in written first and decide afterwards. She was assured that she would not be billed before she made the final order. Today we received the “offering* package - a simple one pager with no details, one third of the text being a disclaimer and lots of promo flyers.
Since I learned only by today that she gave out her credit card info I immeditaley called my credit card company. They found a charge of USD 1020 wich was made against the explicit instructions of my wife.
I immediately wrote a letter of cancellation - let’s see whether we will get a refund. I’ll keep you posted.
Thanks to this site, I looked up the number on google and your site came up!
I am not returning that call!!!!
I hate this marketing crap
Oh, i am in Canada!!!!!
Got the call in Switzerland, called a few friends to watch out and apparently they already received the call and were sane enough to hang up, like me.
Just let them continue it’s the best anti-marketing strategy one can follow. bestusvacations is gonna cry soon..
Best regards
C
Hello
i’m in Switzerland and got this call. It’s about the third time.
I pressed ‘9′ and had someone on the line who asked me for my name. I asked him some questions an said he was doing this for disneyworld.
Some second later he hung up.
After some minutes of waiting another person was on the line. He hung up quite quickly. Now (after 18Minutes) i had the 4. person on the phone but no more conversation…
call is still online..
strange thing…
greetings
Chrigu
… update
I spoke quite long with to persons: They told me alot about this prize (with a lot of fantasy). The Noted my Name (quite wrong: Ivan instead of Christian) an the next person knew this name. They said that they checked it and it was correct…
After all the told me to give my Creditcard Numer (only for checking!!!).
After they found out that i don’t give it they hung up quite quickly.
call is still going on…
…
I live in Switzerland and had the same call on my combox. I tried to find out who was calling but - apparently - the caller did not leave a number.
News from Ireland.More on bestusavacations. My wife was caught by the infamous 878 euro ‘deal’ recently, and gave our credit card details on the understanding that no money would be taken until we had signed and returned the forms they were posting us. Needless to say, the money was charged straight away. When I phned them they told me they had a tape recording of my wife agreeing to this. Visa are not being very helpful. Where does that leave us? Has anyone actually BEEN on the vacation? Any comments?
Mark
i got this call this morning waking me up. I live in calgary canada. I decided to go along with the whole thing while i googled it. At first they describe an amazing free holiday with all this spending money included, and then say if you buy that amazing trip for 3 for only $598 then you get the free cruise to the bahamas as well. They then ask for your credit card number in order for them to be able to ship the package and the crusie details to you. Once you receive the package and decide u want to go then they bill you card for the $598. I told them i didnt want to give them my card number over the phone and so i was transfered to a recorded call with a “manager” who told me how it was safe and that i could just call my credit card company to make sure no funny activity was going on. He then asked for my credit card number as well, this is when i told him i would go get it..and hung up.
I got this call today, and I took them up on it. I can’t wait to take my free cruise. I’m going to look for unicorns while I’m on it. And then, with all the money I saved, I’m going to fulfill a lifelong dream of chartering a private spacecraft to planet Xeltax. You guys really missed out.
I just got the call today in NS Canada. Recognised it as a scam right away, and reported it to the phone company.
I’m also in Nova Scotia, Canada, and got the call on Apr. 7th. I reported it to info@phonebusters.com. I included the URL for this forum.
Hey!
Im in Norway and just got that call..I pressed number 9. is it bad? are they going to take 800euro just cause i pressed number 9? well then i have to contact a lawyer..
Another story from Norway..
Someone from 0019724900000 just tried to call me (our phone has a display that shows the number for each call). I didn’t know about anyone using that number, so I never picked up the phone. Can’t say I regret it :)
Just tried to back trace the phone number stated by Josefina and others:
Sandy Vacation
581 State Road 434 # 100
Altamonte Springs, FL
(407) 830-0147
It’s in the Orlando area. About 10 miles north of city center.
Long Live Switchboard.com !
I have now received that call twice. Never pressed any keys. Just hung up!
(Copenhagen, Denmark)
I live in Canada, today I got called by Kathy, id 2370 from Best USA Vacations http://www.BestUSAVacations.com 1-972-490-0000 in Texas, usual pitch on free vacation as many others have reported, when I became bored and told her that I am expecting her to get my credit card number and that I think that this is a scam, she asked me to point my browser to http://www.usa.visa.com and read the page on Visa Security Program and that i am protected even if I am giving out my credit card number to someone running a scam - I can get my money back if I can prove to VISA that I did not get the product/service back from whoever I authorized the payment to; why would I want that trouble ;-) just want to share this
I’m from Norway, and I got that call as well x)
yay :|
I got this call yesterday.. Hope they`ll Burn
I`m from Norway to. and I got that call yesterday.
Live in Norway and got the call like many others, but I never had the chance to answer it, wasn’t even home.
Looked into the database with missed numbers and spoted one with eleven numbers (1 972 490 0000).
So it was not from inside the country, I knew “1″ is the number to the states. Looked it up and took me half a minute to find the origen of the number.
Called up the number, and no real reply.
Then I knew it had to be some kinda scam.
Normaly the real companies atleast have an answeringmachine with the information about the company that called you.
On to google, and here I am.
Now I know it have to be a scam, for 800€ I’m barely able to get out of the country, nevertheless over to the states, and pay for a cruise.
If it sounds to good to be true, it usualy is!
Just wish I had been home to take the call. Normaly tape all calls from outside the country for fun. Could’ve shared it here then.
I got one call me too. but i felt it was a scam. So i hang up right away. but i never regon i could look up the number on my phone. normaly scams has a hidden phone-number.
i used google to see what i found.
Same here, got the call 10mins ago, didnt take the phone though, coz i have the “show number” on incoming calls.
Im from Norway.
Its registered in Dallas, Texas.
btw - here is the link for the result on this number from the telephone database search.
http://www.tndatabase.com/972/490/0000/?phone_search
What i wonder is, do they pick random phone numbers or ..!?! And im also registered for not wanting calls from sellers. And when u are in norway, its illegal for sellers to call you(they have to check that register first), they can get fined by doing so.
And an addon to my above post, i see some of u have gotten the call from england +44, i had +1 usa. But same number 972-490-0000.
I live in Norway. Someone from 0019724900000 just call today (our phone has a display that shows the number for each call). Our seventeen year old son answerd the phonecall and he was very smart. He understod that it was a lier, he didnt press the number - but hung up :)
Today I receved a call for an free Carrabean cruse in Norway.
I got call today noon time but it went through voicemail because I was away. When I chek\cked voicemail, it recorded as “To reclaim your prize, press 9. That’s the nine-key on your telephone!”
I always check on the Internet before act to it.
Thanks for this all post.
I also got this call today in norway… what people do to make money… *sigh* burn.
i checked up the number on the internet.
here’s the info i got.
TN Database
972-490-0000
Telephone Company: SOUTHWESTERN BELL
Number: 1-972-490-0000
State: TEXAS
Office: DALLAS
Switch: DLLSTXADDS1
Record ID: 19724900000
Entry ID: 9724900000
I also got this call right now in switzerland, in the french part … they said “To reclaim your prize, press 9. That’s the nine-key on your telephone” in english…
But I didn’t see the calling number, because it was written “Inconnu” (unknown) on my cell-phone.
Thank for this blog.
i live in norway and just now received this call. luckily for me and my scepticism i never picked it up 8) -had- i picked it up, though, i would fairly quickly had figured it out an exposed it as a scam.
when something seems too good to be true - it usually is.
but i reckon i could have been in trouble if my daughter was home alone and answered the call…
this kind of abuse is incredibly annoying! :(
just got the same call. pressed 9 and instantly was serviced by a woman, telling me I won, she just needet my telephone number, that I gave her, then I asked her, how they had my number, she told med I won by using my visa on travelling, I told her that I haven’t been travelling for about 5 years, she just told me…do u want the prize or not ?!!!, ofcourse i said and then she asked for my visa expire date. I told her that I did NOT want to participate in this, then the connection just shut of….
Salut! :-)
Got the call today in Larvik, Norway. Didn’t press nine, checked the number and found this site (just to state what most here have stated..).
Of course I now regret not pressing 9, reading about some of the fun people here had with the poor idiots! Actually hoping to get the call again, just to f*ck about a bit with them..
Fun to see the people here sharing info and ideas, fun enough to sit and read transfixed til too late out in the night..!
Lets fry this bastards!;-)
Cheers,
Gaute R
More scammin’ Norway.. bastards.
My mom got this call today, too.
Fortunately, she wasn’t at home at the time, so the number waited in the “missed calls”-menu.
Got a text message from her, wondering who the number could belong to (since my dad lives in Germany, she thought it might be him), I Googled it and.. as so many others, ended up here.
I know there has been some media coverage on this, so I think she would have understood that this was a hoax. I remember her talking about it, because my grandmother had gotten the call.
She doesn’t speak English, though, so she just hung up.
I wonder if there will ever be an end to this. And if so, how long it will take to stop them.
Jupp, Mo i Rana-Norway…got the call like 2min ago.didn’t take the call though, just googled the number…yeah…very smart scam…ha ha:-/
gotta agree with Gaute R on this one.
;-p
>This Dutchmen (living in Norway)fell for their story in january. I managed to get my money back (they double-charged me, $2080 total)after 3 months of being bluffed- and lied to.
Without the help from my creditcard-company and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the money might never have been retrieved…
See also http://boakes.org/ameri-scam/ for more info.
God damn it! Today I just won the cruise for the 3rd time. Guess I’ll be spending rest of the year in the Caribbean…
hei, seems they’ve reached norway :-)
got the call today in Oslo. Hung up when a female computer-voice tried to tell me I’d won something ;-)
Googled and ended here, seeing I’m in good company.
My call came from the US.
I got the phone call a couple months ago. Pressed nine and 3 weeks later I was on a beautiful cruise ship in the caribbean. haha….sure
If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
Hi! Calgary, Alberta, Canada here. I got ‘the call’ early this morning. It was clear to me before I pressed 9 that it was either a scam or a timeshare thing, but I proceeded anyways. I spoke with Beverly for about 20min, details were time in Orlando, Ft Lauderdale, Daytona Beach and a cruise through the Bahamas. total time was 15days/14nights. This would be at a discounted rate of $598 USD. Also included were $1200 cash and a coupon book for attractions and restaurants. I gave her my mailing address, but when she asked for my credit card information I said no. She said “that’s reasonable”, and tranferred me to Neil (the “director”) who was far from reasonable. he first tried to convince me that this was a legitimate company by telling me that they had a website! I laughed and said,
“well so do I”. He then became angry, called me rude and began yelling obnoxious and crazy things at me. I was really laughing now, and I told him “You expect me to give -you- money?” I tried to tell him that he was the one being rude, but his ranting had not stopped, so I just hung up. Like some others, I also noticed that it took a good 2-3 minutes after I hung up for the phone connection to actually terminate. Another thing I noticed was that through the duration of the call, there were intermittent bursts of static. They were regularly spaced, about 30 to 45 seconds. It may have been the connection, but I will call the telephone company to make sure that everything is copacetic. I also phoned the City Police to let them know, but since I wasn’t successfully(?) scammed they can’t actually do anything.
Thanks everyone!
Norway, Oslo, 25.04 - this number had called at 15:16. Was not at home at this time so I don’t know if it whas the same voice.
I have just had the same call, I did press 9, listened to some music, then hung up. I called the number back - it was a toll-free Dallas Texas number, which apparently has been disconnected.
No harm done - but beware of scams!
I just got the call….I was like wooohooo a vacation! I thought there was more to it, but like many others I couldn’t resist and pushed the dreaded #9 key. The recording reminded me to say the keyword of cruise. So a guy comes on the line shortly and acted like I called him, which baffled me. I told him, well I just got transferred after a recording said I won a cruise. He totally flipped out on me, calling me sarcastic. I guess I come off as sarcastic when I was just saying it, and I said well I wasn’t, and immediately got transferred. Another guy answers and I go through well you called me about winning a cruise, no response just got transferred. Then it got weird, it rang and an answering machine picked up, for a family, “hi you’ve reached Mark, April, and two other names, then midway it hung up on me. That was the rudest and most bizarre thing. So I googled it and found this site, glad I’m not the only one!
We got one about the 6th of June!! Been getting weird ones ever since.
I just received a computer phone call myself, and stupid me, I fell for it. Looking a bit deeper, I realized what had just happened. I immedatly contacted my C/C company and cancelled my C/C card. I was one of the lucky ones.
just got the same call in ottawa, canada. figured it was a scam, didn’t press 9 and waited about 20 seconds and the line disconnected.
The calls come from BEST USA VACATIONS in Winter Park, Florida. Phone # (407)481 1185. You can loor them up at http://www.orlando.bbb.org. it’s the florida better business bureau. they don’t think very highly of them either.
I got the call. but unlike most of you I am young and stupid. I gave them everything that they wanted. Then I began to panic after hanging up the phone, so I called my visa company. No transactions had been made yet, so I immediately cancelled my card. I think I am okay now, but I was sure scared. I can only hope now that I don’t get any expensive phone bill. YIKES… I’m glad I looked it up and fixed it all before I got screwed.
July 24, 2006 — got home and the phone rang and I instantly heard a cheerful taped message: “CONGRATULATIONS! - you’ve just won a trip to Florida & the Caribbean” and then I was told to press some number (which i did)— Then some guy answered and asked ME for MY phone number (which puzzled me, as they phoned me - don’t they know my phone number?) then he asked me my name - gave my first name only, as I was getting suspicious. THEN he asked me my age, if I was over 21. Yes I am. THEN he asked me if i was available to travel to Florida or the Caribbean in the next year. (maybe he was asking me on a date? i’m kidding) It felt ridicous to answer but I said “I might be”. Then he asked me which cards I preferred to use when I travel to FLORIDA - do I use my Visa or Mastercard. I don’t even know why i answered, but I said “My visa.” (I did NOT give my Visa number) — then it seemed as if he was talking to someone else, whispering or talking to a workmate. I couldn’t figure it out, but then it seemed as if I was disconnected. And I hung up. Is there anything MORE I should know about this scam? anything bad going to happen after I even talked to these people?
same thing happend to me today in New Brunswick, Canada. I dont really understand from the comments above. are you only billed if you call them back, or are you transfered to a pay-number when you press 9, and billed right then?
I am also from new brunswick canada and they just called me also
New Brunswick, Canada here too. Just got the phone call.
ok im just wondering do u have to pay if u dont press 9 or u dont give them your credit card # thanx
Same thing just happened to me in the UK…
I just had this happen to me this morning in Halifax, Canada. I took it as far as hearing the guy out.Eventually, he said I just have to give my credit card number and they would send some information to my address. The words “credit card number” sent a warning through my mind so I declined. It didn’t occur to me that I might be paying for the call! -I just called our local phone co. and they put a note on my account about a suspicous call. They will help remove a fee if one shows up on my bill, but I have to wait. The phone co. lady was very nice but warned me that “these folks out there are rocket scientists at getting your money” and to never give out a credit card no. over the phone. They might be just phishing for that # and then they can bill the call and other items to your card.
-Thanks for having this blog up, glad I’m not the only scam target!!
Back again - I called a Royal Canadian Mounted Police “phonebusters” information line http://www.phonebusters.com/english/reportit.html and they informed me that this is an actual company and vacation, but not necessarily the best deal you will obtain. Richard at phonebusters also informed me that Best USA Vacations called me, and pressing “9″ just makes a noise (he pressed 9 and made the tone sound). He said the idea that someone can somehow have you press 9 and then use your long-distance is too ‘Star Trek’ (aka not really possible)…I laughed but from what I’m reading online here, many of us have real concerns.
The Canadian competition bureau was a little more sympathetic and seemed to recognize that this is intrusive and not honest business practise.
Just be careful folks! From what I gather on the internet, plenty of people have been screwed on getting refunds. There aren’t too many of us reporting “wonderful relaxing vacations” but maybe I haven’t found the right blogs…hah.
Good luck and be safe, we’re going to have to deal with more and more of this it seems, so warn your friends before it happens to them.
All the best -al
I got the Caribbean phone call today myself, I am in New Brunswick, Canada. I hung up. I absolutely hate being called by computers or auto-dialers. And I doubt I’ld get a *free* vacation, somehow there has to be a catch.
Wow… a lot of folks from NB getting hit. I just got the call 5 minutes ago. Wasn’t really paying attention at first and only realized what it was as I hit the 9 key. Think that was the fastest I’ve ever hung up the phone. What bullshit.
Hey, Glad I found this site. Just got hit this morning in NB, Canada… I did not press 9 cause I didn’t believe a cruise could be free and just offerd to me like that. ;)
Received the same call this morning in Nova Scotia, Canada. Although I feel stupid for doing it, I hit “9.” I’m too trusting and didn’t expect a scam. I called my phone company, Eastlink, and they said, “Tough luck. You will be held responsible for any long distance charges that are now charged to your line from anywhere in the world. We recommend you change your phone number.” But they wouldn’t let me cancel long distance because my name’s not on the account, even though I live here. So in the meantime, I just have to wait and see how much they charge.
Got the same call in Manitoba, Canada today. I just chuckled when I heard I “won” and said sure I did, but I can’t go…. and hung up.
Just got it this morning! I thought I would hit 9 and see what kind of scam this was. I got a dial tone as soon as I hit 9. Hilarious what people will come up with next to try and lure stupid people from their money.
Cheers
I just got the call about my free Caribbean cruise. Just laughed and hung up, then googled and found this site.
i got one of these calls today (i’m in canada)
it was pretty obvious it was a scam, but i hit 9 anyway just for shits and giggles.. the guy on the other end started asking for my name and stuff right off without even telling me what i has supposedly won, so i asked him and his response was something like “we’re usa–uh we’re a travel agency–we’re called usa best–we’re just a regular travel agency–uh, we’re offering you a vacation for over $500 off–yeah, we’re just a travel agency. just like any other travel agency. so i told him i wasn’t interested, to which he reponsed “you aren’t interested in travelling in the next 2 years?” and i hung up
did a google search and found their website, http://bestusavacations.com/ while reading the ‘travel info’ section i found this little blurb..i added the mid-sentence capitalization for emphasis
“Does the quoted price include airfare?
No. We are NOT A TRAVEL AGENCY although we have partnerships with some of the largest travel agencies in the world.”
i just thought that was kinda funny…
also, on there website under ‘about us’ they say they are a subsidiary of Black Diamond Marketing. a google search for “Black Diamond Marketing” yields this: http://www.fcc.gov/eb/Orders/2005/DA-05-1087A1.html
seems the fcc filed a complaint regarding the unsolicited phone calls, and if you read a little into it you will eventually come across this clause:
“If, after receipt of this citation, you violate the Communications Act or the Commission’s rules in any manner described herein, the Commission may impose monetary forfeitures not to exceed $11,000 for each such violation or each day of a
continuing violation. 6″
maybe somebody can use this to get a little revenge?
Hi H3nry,
I just looked at the last link you showed. Obviously they are clever as they are now making sure that the people they call are outside the US and therefore they are not in violation of the citation. It seems like most people have the right attitude, just hang up and move on!
peace,
Charlie
I’m in NB, Canada and have been getting these calls at LEAST once a day for over 2 weeks now (sometimes up to 3 times a day). It’s on my voicemail daily. Finally today, I was home and actually hit 9 - my only response to the guy was “We’re not interested and stop calling”!
I guess he finally got sick of hearing that because after a minute or so, he hung up on me ;)
I got the call and pressed 9, a minute later I was berated with insults from a redneck sounding guy. He was trying to keep me on the line, probably to try to scam me. He said, ” ya know why am tryan to keep y’all on the line?” and i hung up.
Fucking ameriKKKans SUCK ASS!
I just spoke with my phone company rep, she told me thousands of people get these calls every day, and not all are from the same company, or even for the same scam.
The call I got was from a texas based company who was apparently trying to link up with a business line (at work we press 9 to get an outside line)
I am soooo sick of amerikkkans, I hope they get it again and again. because they deserve it!
I got the call this morning in Ontario, Canada…was woken up from it and pressed 9. Really i wanted to know how they got my number and to tell them to take it off. The computer lady said that the phone call would not be charged to me but to the company. It just rang and rang and then finally hung up on me (before I hung up on it). I called Bell Canada - apparently it’s a Florida Telemarketing company. Bell can fax the CDMA (Canadian Direct Marketing Association) to take your number off their list…it will take 4-6 weeks to take effect and then you will be covered for 3 years. It’s not 100% ‘fool-proof’, but at least it’s something (and it only covers Canada…they can’t do anything about the States). They also said that usually telemarketers (like this one) get your information from your credit card company who sells your information. It could also be random dialing.
I just got the call, pressed nine, and after like 2 minutes, someone got around to answering… they asked if I was 21, and i was like yeah…. do you have master or visa… no but i can get one from my parents…. so you don’t have master or visa? no…. “Can you call me back… i will get a card” sorry sir you need a credit card right now. Click………….. she hung up on me…
Dialed *69 to trace the call and it said that it was an unknown number…. wow… sounds like a huge scam to me.
Hi, I’m from Manitoba Canada. Looks like there making the rounds around the world. I got the call @ 2pm. I just hang up and then google it, and here I am,lol. :)
Gotta love the internet, cheers
I received this same computerized call on August 16, 2006. I’m also from Manitoba, Canada. I hung up right away, but was unable to make any outgoing calls for two minutes because the call was not terminated by the telemarketing company. If I had an emergency, I would not have even been able to call 911. Is that even legal?
I’m in winnipeg, Canada, got the call at 12:15 pm hung up tried to *69 but the call would not disconnect, i was already aware of these calls but what happens? nothing??
I am in Canada and just received this same call. I responded inorder to request that I be removed from their calling list which, according to US and Canadian law, they must do immediately.
The first sales person refused, imediately connecting me to another sales person in the US. This person asked my name and refused to give her name (again a violation of law), then launched ionto a sales-pitch. I interrupted her once and tried repeatedly to interrupt again in order to get her to remove me from their list. She just kept speaking louder and louder over me.
I finally took the receiver and smashed it several times on my desk just to shut her up. That didn’t work and, once I pout my phone back together, I called the telephone company who was very helpful, as far as they are able.
I determined that the initial call was made from a Sprint sales team, obviously contracted to make the calls or at least hiring a Sprint number in order to make the predictive-dialing call.
I then went to the Canadian Direct Marketing Association and filled out their form to be placed on the “do not call/ do not write” list which marketers are supposed to abide by.
I then contacted that Federal government consumer affairs department and made a formal complaint about this company.
What really makes me angy is that people like this might well have reached my mother (aged 82) instead of me. Can you imagine how upsetting it would have been for her to be treated this way?
Re” “Bst USA Vacations”
Apparently, “Best USA Vacations” is merely a cover for a company called “Black Diamond Marketing”
I note that someone above made this connection.
I found this: http://badbusinessbureau.com/reports/ripoff205022.htm –indicating that Black Dioamond/”Best USA Vacations” is less than “consumer friendly” in its manner.
I got the call this morning in Toronto. I knew straight away it was a scam and on checking the web, that was confirmed.
I will be getting in touch with the ‘phonebusters’ as mentioned by someone here.
I fear for our older folks who are not in touch with the web to verify such frauds and who still believe that most of the world is honest.
Just got the same call this morning, in Nova Scotia , Canada. I hung up as soon as I heard it though. :)
hey, I got the crappy phone call too not even 10 mintues ago. They told me congratulations you’ve won a cruise, please press 9 to forward your call. As soon as i pressed 9, the line sent me to some dude he’s like, “Hello American Cruises” (or something like that) I told him that I won the cruise, and he asked me how old i was. I said i was 19, and the man said, “Sorry you have to be 21….secret squirell!” Then he hung up. Secret Squirrel, I thought, what the fuk is that? So I googled (thank god), and it led me here. Thank god I made it here, I called my telephone company right away and they said that its a scam, and not to worry about the bill.
Hi… I’m also in Winnipeg Canada and received a call from Best USA Vacations with the same story..won a cruise, yadiyadayada. The guy who called gave me his name MIKE YANSON and the telephone number 1-407-487-1185. When I refused to give him my credit card number he tried to sell me some story about giving me a toll free number to call and they would call him to the phone…yeah…right…that’s convincing. When I told him I was not comfortable with the phone call he hung up on me. I’m furious about the situation and called phone busters but they weren’t especially helpful, just told me that the situation had been reported numerous times and they weren’t really taking anymore complaints about it. If the situation is so well known to them then how come nothing has been done about it?? I wasn’t even able to find any information about this particular scam on their website! Does anyone know of anything that we as “potential victims” can do to bring this company down?? I’m tempted to start calling government officials and the hotels I was told I’d be staying in with my prize in Florida hoping that maybe they might take it upon themselves to do something if they feel their businesses names are being dragged through the dirt! Any advice?
hi….I live in Winnipeg Canada and just got my call. Thinking as long as I don’t give out my credit card number I can listen to this so I pressed 9 and started to listen to their spiel. I thought it was probably one of those time share things but as they continued to babble and were so insistent I became suspicious. I asked them to let me call them back to verify that this was a legit company and of course they refused to do that. Then I told them I wasn’t interested and they became upset stating I did not understand, I told them I do understand I hang up and your ligit my loss not theirs what do they care. They became more agitated so I decided to look it up on the net when I found this site. Thank you for this.. did not even occur to me that if you press 9 they can actually charge you so hung up. I was transferred through 3 people, Lindsay, Jennifer Scott and Tamara all giving the phone number 407-843-0336 and of course the official extention number 115. I called MTS and they assured me they will null and void the charges because it is a fraud and told me to call phonebusters to report them which I will be doing right now. I am so grateful for this site and will be checking it often to see if anyone has come up with an idea to bust this company apart which would be such a joy.
Hey, I am aswell from Winnipeg Canada, I checked my answering machine this morning, and glad I hadn’t answered it, It was the Free Curise bull. then I looked it up to see if it was a scam and sure enough, look at all the people who have had these calls.
I’m from Winnipeg, Canada, and at 8:17 a.m. I received this call AGAIN. And again, it took a minute for my phone line to free up after I hung up. This same company called on August 15 and 16, 2006, with the same results, inaccessible for me to make outgoing calls because their autodialer would not stop once I hung up the phone.
I have called my phone company, who were of no help, phonebusters, who were of no help and just referred me to the CRTC, and the CRTC was no help and said that phonebusters was supposed to help me. Essentially, I didn’t get anywhere. How in the world are we supposed to get these scam artists to leave us alone???
i got the call too, and i pressed 9, but i hung up after it rang once (no one answered in that time).
anyone get billed buy a phone company for that? or would the charges not begin till the call is accepted? im not familiar with long distance calling, i dont use it at all. ever.
I had a message left on my answering machine about an hour ago asking me to call this # to claim my cruise. Ya, I’m that dumb. Thats twice this year I’ve won a ‘free’ trip or cruise. the last one seemed almost legit wtih people calling back within 48 hours to let me know if I’d won or not which of course I magically do.
I’m from Winnipeg and I received the call.. this would be the 3rd time this month. I pressed the “9″ key just like many of you have and was connected to a woman on the other end. She answered “Travelview Awards Department” and I asked her again what outfit this was and she immediately hung up on me. So I called the RCMP non-emergency line to see what could be done. They forwarded me to Phonebusters 1-888-495-8501 and told me that if I had given my credit card information that I should notify the police immediately. Phone busters informed me that if you press the “9″ you WILL NOT be charged for the call. Just don’t give them any financial information. If you didn’t sign-up to win something.. you can’t possibly have won it. Take a look at http://www.phonebusters.com and they give you some information as to what the scheme is all about. Be careful and cheers everyone!
Can you believe these a$$holes! I’ve won a Carribean cruise…yeah, and I’m the Queen of England. Who the HEdoublehockeysticks gives out free trips? Get a #$*@! life idiots. Don’t answer these calls…just hang up people.
Just got the call here on Prince Edward Island. These guys are real globe trotters!

I live in Alberta, Canada, and just received “the call”..free Carribian Cruise..Disneyland for 4 days/3 nights; Datona Beach for 3 days/2 nights..they said 80% off airfair to get me there; good for 12 mts but could extend! The catch? They wanted me to pay $598 by Visa or M/C today, on the phone…do they think that I just fell off the turnip truck? I went immediately to the internet and found several sites that expose them as scams. Neil..my first contact, put his boss on the line when I objected to the money..I told the boss guy that I searched the internet and that they had been id’d as a scam..he hung up on me…I did get their current phone#..it is:
1-407-781-3210..go ahead all you people..give them a call..I am about to report them.
To Norma in Alberta
All of there recent info has been posted by me.
They have a toll free #s:

Recived phone call in Newzealand Does anyone know if prize is 100% or not IS IT WORTH THE RISK?
I just got the call in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada too. I pressed 2 and it disconnected me. lol
Just got the following call 3:30 PM local time. I’m in Halifax Nova Scotia Canada. I pressed 9 and it said it was transferring my call so i hung up. I was suspecious that there might be some sort of reverse phone charges or something, so didn’t stay on long enough to find out anything else. Automated message was:
Congratulations! You’ve won a free caribbean cruise. To reclaim your prize, press 9. That’s the nine-key on your telephone.
Hi !
Just got a call in Montréal, Québec, Canada… As I don’t know any person or any company that would call me in English, I started being suspicious, and without thinking, just hung up…
But, is there anyone that may report any consequence in bills ?
British Columbia Canada, just got the call 5 minutes ago. Hang up!!!!!!!!
I’m in Calgary. I’ve had the same phone call a number of times. This time I pressed 9 because I was fed up and wanted to make it stop. After a series of clicking noises, I heard a man’s voice and I said ‘please remove my number from your call list’.
He said: ‘F— you. No.’
I was caught off guard and said, ‘excuse me?’ so he very thoughtfully repeated himself and added a series of expletives. The only thing I noticed was that he had a strong American accent, so I asked him if he was an American. He said ‘yes’ and really let lose, calling me a f—ing b—- and a ‘ho’. Obviously, he knows he can get away with it.
After that, I tried unsuccessfully to have Telus trace the call. It proved to be untraceable. After several calls, I confirmed that Telus does not believe these people can commit fraud using only the 9 that I pressed on my telephone keypad (apparently, I’d have to be connected to a network before they could do that). Telus believes the whole point is to con me into disclosing personal information like my credit card or SIN number.
I almost wish they’d call again, because I just remembered something I’d like to say to that person.
Telus claims it’s a relatively new scam so they’re still trying to catch up.
Robert in Winnipeg: how were you able to get those phone numbers?
I just received the exact same message on my answering machine. I live in Canada!!
What a scam
this thing is obviously going through area codes …i think alberta will be done with it soon. better give BC telus a heads up!!
In Edmonoton, Alberta Canada.
Just got called, I pressed 9 (as I work for the phone company and know I can’t get charged) and some lady came on the phone and wanted to verify my personal information. She asked for my name, address and phone number. I said, “You called me, shouldn’t you know that information?”. She hung up. Be very careful not to divulge any info!!!
I just got the call as well and hung up. Their number showed up on the caller ID. I think I will email MTS (My phone provider) to see if they can do anything to stop this.
In case you want the number it’s 1-727-831-2410. I googled the area code and it’s from Florida.
got it today in calgary. who falls for this? “a fool and his money are soon parted.”

!the beast from the east!
Got the call today in Calgary, hung up but the number on the call display was as follows: 727-831-2410
I didn’t try to call back, but in case it helps to track back to these scammers or if it prevents someone from being taken advantage of then here it is.
I received the call this afternoon. I was stupid enought to give our my first and last name, then they hung up on me.
I’m usually very aware of this kind of thing but I’m actually going to the Carribbean in 2 weeks time and was caught a bit off guard.
I phoned Telus and was transferred to their privacy department who advised that it was just a scam to book vacations and obtain credit card details.
I only gave out my name so hopefully they can’t do anything with that, however why would they hang up after me giving these details and not try to get my credit card info etc. Seems like a waste of time, if they can’t do anything with it. Lets hope.
Just got the call at 1:30 p.m.
Out of curiosity, I also pressed 9 (knowing that I could hop on the net and see, well, this and not give any info out).
Script….
Person: “Hi there, who am I speaking with?”
Me: “(Gave first name)”
Person: “Well (Name), I’d just like to inform you that you’ve been duped.”
Then they hung up. Didn’t ask for info or anything.
What I’m wondering is, could they be looking for the head of the household? I’m a 20 year old who just got home from college, my parents were both outside. Can anyone comment on this?
Hi , my family and I just got de same call, put we don’t press this famous button. I’m just curious.. who are these guys who play this little game since two years…and why nobody does something to stop them?
Ok, got the solution….
I just got the call again, and if you stay on the line and not press anything for an additional 30 seconds, a guy will come on and say press 9 to be put through to a representative and 8 to be put on our no call list.
i just got yet another call from these people…no number showed up on the phone but I did *69 and found out the # is 727-831-2410 which is a Tampa, FL # … we have asked to be removed from the list multiple times…never been cursed out for it like the one lady said happened to her…my girlfriend did get hung up on and after that didn’t hang up right away because she heard people talking…she then was able to listen in on a couple of their conversations and heard them outright lying to a sweet sounding old lady. Oh ya I forgot to mention how they accused her of lying when she said she didn’t have a credit card and she doesn’t LOL but the girl continued to press saying “ma’am I have the information right in front of me i KNOW you have a credit card why are you lying to me” morons hahaha
Now when I press 9 to get through and let someone have it …it rings for a minute (sometimes not at all) then hangs up haha
What kind of legitimate company calls people at 9pm ??? HA!!
My girlfriend just pointed out that they’ve always been shocked to hear we’re in Canada.
i just remembered this weird message we got on our phone thanking us for using a long distance service that i’ve NEVER heard of in my life let alone used…
i wonder if this might have something to do with it.
It appears the current phone number doing the calling up here to Ontario, Canada is 1-727-831-2410 as stated above. As I understand it they are breaking U.S. law if they do not give you an opportunity to be taken off their list. Perhaps this is why the numbers being used keep changing as they try to stay one step ahead of the authorities?
Since I don’t accept telephone solicitations of any kind anyway, I don’t have any problem hanging up on a computer. :)
I got the same call just a few minutes ago up here in Ontario, Canada. The long distance number was 1-407-475-1002 just in case anyone wants to know. I believe 407 is Oklahoma.
Just hang up. I’m pretty sure pressing 8 to get off their calling list will do nothing seeing as they’re scammers. That’s my advice anyways :D
Here in Ottawa, Ontario. Got the call. 407 475 1002. Just hung up.
Same thing just happened to me, I did’nt push the any button… Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada.
Hello
Great book. I just want to say what a fantastic thing you are doing! Good luck!
Bye
Hi all, From Montréal’ Canada. Got the same phone call this afternoon as you all since 2005, but now the phone number has changed. Nw, it’s 727-831-2410
I didn’t answer the phone since I didn’t even know that area code was existing!!
I searched on the internet and I found out that it was coming from Clearwater, Florida, and it seems to be a cellphone.
I also found a website talking about that crap
http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/
I saw on this website that many people around the country (Canada) had been called in end of July and beginning of August 2007.
So, I just went on google and found that site like you.
Thanks all of you guys for the messages. I hope we can stop that crap soon. Keep going!
I just got the exact call. I’m in Canada Ontario, I pressed 9 to talk to someone about getting my name off their lists,,I heard clicks and then I hung up. I picked the phone back up and I could hear people saying hello, but could not hear me. My telephone company could not help, I called them right after.
Hi all, From Sorel-Tracy, Québec, Canada.
Same thing just happened to me, I suspect something I heard on the television something like that a few year ago. I did’nt push the 9 and I just hung up the phone…
So, I just went on google and found that site like you.
Thanks all of you guys for those messages. I hope we can stop that crap soon.
Just got the call in Prince Edward Island Canada. Did not press 9, and eventually they hung up.
Fraud. I got that too. I live in Canada too. Lol, they take random numbers from everywhere.
Got the call in Montreal, Canada a few minutes ago. Since they now seem to be calling many in Canada, i called the police to mention it. Pressed the phone companie’s system for tracking such calls (*57) but the system said the call was not tracable. If you are in Canada and use Bell, you can try but note that there is a 5$ fee.
Got the call in Montreal Canada. Glad to see this thread and know I didn’t miss out on anything by hanging up quickly.
Just got the same call in Sydney Australia. They must make some money out of this to still be doing it after 3 years.
I just got the “Caribbean Cruise” call here in Sydney, Australia.
I didn’t even wait for the spiel to finish. As soon as I realised it was a voice recording I hung up…hope they don’t call again !
Cheers,
Just got the call in Quebec, Canada
On Oct 5th same scam, all inclusive cruise free disney world tickets, but I pressed 9 and talk to the guy who really tried to get me to sign up but I didn’t give him anything, I’m afraid if he calls again, hill try to get info.
Canmore Ab,Oct 5, 2007 3:30
I’m so annoyed. I’m in Alberta and this company keeps calling me! They have now called me about 10 times. I’ve asked to be removed a few times and of course they didn’t. Why can’t they people be tracked down? You’d think there would be a way…some company has to provide them with service to call out. This is totally harrasing!
I just got off the phone with Bell Canada. They can’t do anything but you can block them if you have the *60 option (for blocking telemarketers). I did find this article though which explains exactly what this type of fraud is:
http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2007/01/16/phonescam.html
I stayed on that call almost 30 minutes and it kept ringing back to me with a recorded message, at one point the message said “yes topless, you like having fun Vanessa don’t you” My name is Connie Sometimes it said “do you speak english” duh.. Hope this helps.
In Newfoundland Canada… this thing is out of control. I got the call today and hung up. My Mom got it yesterday… she just hung up as well.
Any company that does business with the telephone has to have their own DO NOT CALL list. Especially if they are US based. It is mandated by the FCC. I just got the call today from Newfoundland and I hit 9 and politely told her that I know she has a personal do not call list and that this is a recorded line and I have the name of your company and your name and I am requesting that you put my number on your companies do not call list.
Once you have registered this information with their own personal do not call list and they call you again, it is time to call your lawyer.
Anyone who gets this call, tell them to put your number on their company do not call list and if they call you again they are actually breaking the law. They have called here a number of times but once I told them that we have not heard from them since.
Good luck all. These *ssholes should be shot but as long as there are suckers out there, there will be *ssholes willing to take advantage of those suckers.
Well, just had the Caribbean cruise call here in Surrey, England!
just called me on october 23rd, québec city, canada, what a bunch of *ssholes…
I wrote 279 and added the *60 feature on my phone to block them. The number is 727-831-2410. Believe it or not, I can’t even block the number! I have the bell technicians looking into it. They called for the 2nd time this week. I’ll let you know what Bell can do.
Granby, Quebec
I got this phonecall this afternoon
The call said ” you are the winner of a IBM computer”
I press 9 , I said ”allo - allo - allo” in french and nobody told me.
The number is 407-475-1002.
I also had the call that I won a caribbean cruise and florida vacation ect…The guy said everything I wanted to hear, until the recording! Disney passes, free hotels, spending money and so on, then when I advised my husband he called our cred card company.(Yes I gave them our CC number) They had already charged us when they said it would only be charged when we read the info and agreed to it!!I guess it goes to shows their are people out there with absolutly no conscience, I know that I will never ever go for a telemarketing scam again, however I had to learn the hard way. Please if this helps anyone than at least I will feel better. Don’t let it happen to you! HANG UP!!!
I’m from Quebec too, they called me twice this week. If they call again, I’ll try to block them somehow, I’ll probably give a call to my telephone company. These marketing agencies are such a pain…
I live in Australia and received an identical call with a trip to the Caribbean. I hung up so I don’t know what happens when you press 9
Got this call for the first time in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I found something very creepy about the vocal recording, and was immediately compelled to hear what the scammers would have to tell me. I pressed 9 and waited for a few rings, only to hear a recording that prompted me to leave a message or dial someone’s extension if I knew it. I tried to dial the extention 123 and get someone, but I only got something like “invalid extension - goodbye.” Then it hung up.
I wonder where any valid extensions might lead.
Got it too in Montreal.
Pretty annoying for me but imagine it calling some innocent old lady…
Just got the very same call, november 28, in Montreal, Canada.
I immediately thought ” this is pure crap ” but i pressed 9 just to see what would happen. there was a man’s voice who said something i didn’t understand about a live operator, then i said : What the hell ? And the communication stopped right there.
Weird.
They are hitting Australia now. I pressed 9 and the line is so bad that they can’t quite hear me. For giggles I didn’t hang up and what is happening is that after a while, I get redirected back to another person who answers, hangs up, and it all happens again. It wastes their time - which is good. What just happened though is it was like I got a crossed line, I could hear the company talking to someone. They tried to make out that the award was part of accuring points on the persons visa card etc. The conversation progressed to the point where credit card details were requested, but not given. Luckily the person didn’t give them out. Wow, since I’ve been typing this another crossed line. :)
and it continues. I can hear their calls. I’ll post up anything interesting. :)
Ken is talking to someone now. :)
They’re hitting up Canada too. They called me twice in two weeks.
I called Bell Canada and all they could do is suggest I buy services from the phone company to try and block the number, or filter the incoming calls. What a bummer.
I managed to identify the number that called me.
They are calling from Bennington, Vermont:
Area code is the first three digits:
802-681-4148.
But if you ask them where they’re calling from, they’ll tell you that they’re in Orlando, Florida. Strike one!
The problem is that if you call back at this number, an automated recording will tell you that the number is no longer in use. Strike two!
Also check this link for further info:
http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-802-681-4148
They are a bunch of a**holes… But you’ll be a bigger a**hole if you give them any personal info, like your credit card number. Or even your name.
Watch out for them, they’re after your money. Strike three!
I am in Melbourne, Australia and I got my call this afternoon, exactly the same as everybody else. I hung up of course. The only reason I thought to investigate is because I had been on the phone not two hours earlier to Paypal about a credit card transaction that I needed advice about (horrible ebay experience - seller refunded me, but the payment is still not in my account) Then when I got the call I wondered if these people are somehow using Paypal or Ebay as a source for their selection? Are any of you guys buyers/sellers on Ebay? Do you guys have Paypal accounts? I could be completely wrong here, but I thought it was a wierd connection.
I live in Montreal, Canada. I got the call a few minutes ago. As soon as I heard the word ‘free’ I knew it was a scam. I hung up after being told to press 9. Man, some people have time to waste…I don’t know how my number got onto some weird guy’s list but I sure hope it has nothing to do with the attempted identity theft I was warned about by my bank a few weeks ago…
Lagoon City, Canada
I have recieved this call 3 times in 2 weeks!
First 2 times I just hung up, but on the last call I did press 9 and somebody mumbled something and I asked what co. is this: “Travel Pros” is what it sounded like. When I asked for the mailing address they hung up.
I dislike being assaulted by technology, next time I will play along and get some info so WE can annoy them. I recommend everyone ‘fish’ for info about these telephone terrorists without giving personal info.
Cheers
Montreal, Canada.
Just got the call. Looks like they’re at it again. We need to recruit some hackers to kick these people’s ass.
I’m in Victoria (the Australian Victoria, that is), and I just got the call at about 1pm. I pressed 9 but immediately hung up. Good thing too!
We had a call today saying we had one a free cruise. My mother who is a very smart lady, who wouldn’t fall for scams, decided out of curiousity to press 9. After a lot of questions and the person asking for credit card details she politly declined the offer. The very rude American said before hanging up, you and your husband should go suck on some fu*****g balls. The person said the company they were from was Fla trip. THEY NEED TO BE STOPPED
Anyone who wrote in from Victoria, Australia. Did you get a company name? I keep seeing on this website best usa vacations but my mother was told they were from FLA trip, I am not getting much usefull searches on this.
I work for a local telco and this caribean cruise is doing the rounds in NSW about now with a few of our customers. Obviously the stupid thing doesn’t realise the time zone differences as it ring in the middle of the night and gets people out of bed.
Well this has finally made its rounds to western Canada. I just notified my local TV station and the RCMP. Not that its going to do much but hopefully no one else gets scammed.
I live in Quebec city, I just got the call now a few seconds ago. I pressed the 9 key, and then I remembered it could be a false call. I did a quick search, and this website was the first that popped up. I quickly hanged up.
I live high in the mountains in Southern Tasmania and have received this call several times in the last 2 years, despite the fact I have a private number. I just hang up on it.
When they call me I press 9 then set the phone down for a couple of hours, this way they have to pay for the phone call. Tonight I checked after 60 minutes and I was still on connected, infact I listened to a conversation due to cross-talk on the phone line. I heard the sales person say they needed a credit card to reserve the room in Florida… fortunately the credit card was not give.
yEAH. JUST GOT A CALL FROM 802-681-4148 SAYING i WON A CARIBBEAUN CRUISE…PRESS 9… ON JANUARY 19 AT 1.56 PM. Montreal, Canada
Same here, got it on the 28th… in Gatineau Canada
I just got the call in Maine, US. Reference to this call has been posted on this website since 2005. Calls have been made primarily in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Australia and Canada (or perhaps those are the only countries corresponding on this website) but I haven’t seen any in USA (but I didn’t look at all 308 posts). They seem to trace back to many different US and Britain numbers. Bizarre.
Just got the same call, in British Columbia, Canada. Wish I’d read the earlier posts regarding leaving the line open and letting them rack up the charges.
I’m a phone guy for a large enterprise. A couple of thoughts……
They will be paying pennies per minutes (on the order of $0.02 per minute or less). So, keeping the line open doesn’t cost them much UNLESS we ALL do it and nobody buy into the scam.
With the right equipment and connection to the public phone network, CALLER ID numbers CAN BE FAKED (I can make a call from my desk and make it appear as if it’s coming from anywhere in my province — perhaps even North America (haven’t tried that)). To set a return # I don’t “own” is quite illegal, but it’s not hard to do. The cost is high for the average person, but not for a scam business that is making hits.
In many jurisdictions, the phone number lets you can dial a code that reports the real calling ID to the phone company, but I believe that is usually reserved for threatening and harassment calls, not scams.
I said “the phone number lets you can dial a code” (did a REALLY write that!?!?!
Should have read “the phone company let you dial a code”
Mike from Saskatchewan Cananda,
I just got the same call *press 9 to claim your prize. A man came on the line after several rings and told me for $498 four friends can travel to Florida and then have a 16day caribean cruise. I asked him for a phone number and did not give him my mastercard # when asked. He said is # was 407-781-3212
Ok, same as everybody, but My caller ID showed the fallowing number:
VERMONT
(802)681-4148
I waited a few minutes and tried to call…
Message :
THE FALLOWING NUMBER IS NOT IN SERVICE…
bla bla bla…
So I called the Sureté du Québec (police) to let them know and to ask if anything could be done to help this stupid trick. I was first asked if I gave in a credit card number… No
If I talked to anybody… No
Finally to be told that if I recived an extra phone charge, I should call back the police to let them know from whom… they are hunting for the bunny!
ON the 14th of Febuary I had received a phone call while I was sleeping from 802-681-4148. I had done a backtrace of the phone number through the 411 website so I knew where it was coming from and the service provider.
Mike, I agree with finding the original phone number for the scammers then doing a search for thier provider that they are hooked up to. This is great information that a persons phone company should be aware of to contact the scammers service provider to disable their access.
I’m wondering when all this scamming crap with stop.
If I feel it’s being a real nuisance, I might be so creeped out that I would have to contact the FBI
They’re dialing through Saskatchewan, Canada now ( Feb 22, 2008). A buddy of mine received a call a couple weeks ago and I just got one today. Same thing, press 9 to claim your Caribbean cruise. Sasktel said to just hangup, then pickup and dial *57. This marks the call for a trace. If they call back 5 times or more within 2 weeks then Sasktel can look into doing something about it. Other than that, just hangup.
Cheers!
I just got a similar call. I’m in the US and decided to check it out online while I was still on the phone (thank you… high speed).
Just recieved this call in Australia. I did not press 9, I waited and the system hung up on me
I just got it too. Did the same as 317 and got the same result.
I just had the samne call about 10 mins ago, didnt even get as far as pressing anything just hung up then searched the web and found this thread, looks like its spread to UK now
Got the call in Yellowknife, NWT (Canada). I pressed nine, and asked the lady on the line what the deal was and she hung up on me immediately. Hilarious.
Just got a call - pressed 9 out of curiosity, it was a recording, i could not talk to the other person, so i left it on speakerphone, hopfully costing them money lol
I mean what is the point even if they cant even hear you talk back to them lol Shawn Doggett he said his name was, FLA TRIP was the name of the company he was claiming to be with
some free cruise……..which apparently does not exist, oh he also says i can goto universal studios and disney world sounds fun ! hahah
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM LAST POST
_____________________________________
okay, well i have left my phone on speakerphone, thing is i can hear one side of them actually phoning up more people…..i can only hear thier side of the conversation, quite interesting, I think the way thier telephone system works is that they can`t disconnect you afterwards…..im listening them trying to get peoples credit card details no doubt. shocking
Ok Listened for a while now….
can give some more info…….
what they are doing is giving you for around 400 pounds the cruise and your accomidation, BUT does not include flights and i can probably tell you that they are going to try and make you sit through a time share presentation…..it just spells out dodgy dodgy dodgy! i would stay away…..
Got the same scam, didn’t press 9 and hung up, I’m from Quebec.
I just got the call maybe 10 minutes ago, and this is the third time since the last around… 3 - 4 months ago? Apparently it’s not only in Switzerland, Australia, UK and whichever other places that this thread has talked about. I’m in Ontario, Canada :(
I just got the same phonecall about a minute ago and just hung up. i did 1471, but the number was unavailable. I live in the UK.
I just got this call and I am in Australia. Looks like I am not the only one who googled it. It was just so random.
And, 3 years worth of comments regarding it. lol
I’m in Adelaide, Australia and have had this phone call twice today, the last at 10pm. Very annoying. Thanks for all the other comments. I’ll register the calls with our Telstra but it is doubtful they can do anything.
Yeah from Adelaide & rec’d the this phone cll, didn’t even bother to to listen to the end of the cll so didn’t know I had to press a number but stupid @ssholes, if you’re going to pull a scam like this then DON’T ring @ 10pm. Seriously if it’s been going on for this long then they must be making money out of it so you think someone would have them prosecuted for theft. Anyway the very least these F@cking idiots can do is change the spiel so they don’t get caught.
Just got the call today 18.30pm I live in the UK and have calling barring but they still managed to get through, hung up immediately but it took sometime to get the dial tone back. I also had a similar recorded message from a financial debt recovery firm which I tracked back to the US. Is this a sign of whats to come?
Maybe this site is part of the real scam which is to get your email addresses by phoning you up with an obvious scam and waiting for you to google it and enter your email address on the comments form.
MUHHAAAAAHAAA
MUUUUUUUUUHHAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAA
…same annoying thing happend today here in Zurich
http://www.skiclubc365.ch
Just got this same call today the 9th of April around Noon in Australia It went through to my answering machine “a cruise to the carribean to claim you’re prize simply press the 9 key thats the 9 key”
Almost everyday I also get calls from an indian call centre either telling me I have won a phone and they pretend they are my phone company and ask for details but are actually trying to switch my carriers and extract info. Also frequently get a call offering travel vouchers which cost $119 or $129 dollars (Indian call centre also. I have no idea where this carribean scam is run from though and won’t find out if they call again because I’m worried if I will get charged if I press 9.
Weird- I am from country South Australia and I just got this call and decided to Google it straight away. I did not press nine thank God but am worried what the consequences would be if be if one of my kids press it when I am not here.
I just received the call five minutes ago, pressed 9 and a man answered but then the call dropped out. Jumped on the web and found this site. Cannot believe how long people have been receiving these calls!
i got the call today, nerver had those before, could it be related to the fact that i just got a AmericanExpress card? I just sing up for it in order to shop at Costco. Could it be related? who knows what those big companies do with our info. Who actually reads the small print confidentiality thing? And who can actually enforce it?
I just got the exact same call in Melbourne. When I pressed 9 out of curiousity, I got put through to an american accented male. He asked me to give him my credit card number so he could prove I was the winner. When I said I didnt know him and i wouldnt do that, he hung up.
Is this Legal?
I got the call today, Perth Australia, and have had it at least three times at my home. Today I just left the phone off the hook for about 5 minutes, tried pressing 9 but nothing happened.
Brisbane, Australia, Got the you have won a Cruise press 9 call, i did, the jerk answered so i said “hello, what’s the catch?” He replied”Is that the way you call a company, ‘what’s the catch?’ are you an idiot?” I said “are you insulting me? I’m making a joke” Then he kept going, “Are you an bloody imbecile?”etc. Geez, obviously i’m not an idiot and that’s the problem he had with me!
Just got the call in Adelaide Australia at 10pm. I wanted to go but had the phone upside down and was madly pressing 6!!! My kids are too feral to take on a cruise anyhooo!
Melbourne, Australia - 1pm today.
After the female, american accent said that I had won a cruise and asked me to press 9, I just waited… They rung off.
I would pay handsomely for names and addresses of those responsible -
Seems like half the world is affected - who to turn to?
How do we bring justice to these people that would steal from others?
I am going to look into this further.
Australia 8pm. I’ve been getting these calls about once a week.
Yeah, same thing here. Brisbane, Australia about an hour ago. Took me that long to read through all the hilarious comments on this thread and post :)
Just got a phone call and pressed 9 like a muppet and told her to FO and stop scamming people i hope i do not get billed for my trouble with a preimuim rate number tho. Sounds more like a credit card scam to me,,
All the best
JJ
Yes we got one today as well, They are even calling 0845 numbers in uk its a credit card fraud thing, Do not give them any info at all not even your name.
God Bless
Just got this call… I’m in Canada. I pressed 9 for fun but when I heard “your call is being transfered” I got afraid to be billed for communication and hung up… good to see that I did the right thing !
- JL
Same thing, here in England, half an hour ago.
And we are on the Telephone preference list, it’s not legal to call us.
Number withheld, so no idea where it came from,
in australa half an hour ago.
we’re on the do not call list too. might ring the telco.
..And from ‘down under’ to Ireland!
Hung up after the word ‘Carabbean’..
Haven’t they been caught yet??
I live in England and god dammit i fell for it too!
So annoying i pressed nine and then they were like oh we have to just confirm you are a visa or mastercard holder and i said oh sorry my parents are out and they are the ones with the cards then the line was disconnected. i stayed on the ohne (absolute idiot but i really want a carribean cruise and these things intrigue me) but then another woman answered so i said ” hi i juts got a call about a carribean cruise) and i was disconnected agian. this carried on for a while then i had a brain check and hung up.
so annoyed with myself now. i reeaaally hope this doesnt charge the phone bill as my parents wont be happy - tye are more sensible and would have probs hiung up straight away!
Wow I have won a cruise! why am I not excited? to claim it I had to press 9 which would have connected me to a premium phone line and no cruise at the end of it.
I have had numerous phone scams in the past but this is the first time I`ve had this one, It looks like they are targeting the UK now beware!
I left the phone off the hook to run up their bill but it cut off after about 15 seconds, what a shame, I was hoping to leave it at least an hour, I am also registered with TPS so they shouldn`t have rung me anyway but as they did not disclose their number I can`t report it.
A few minutes ago they were back in the Netherlands… I told the mechanic lady to go %^^& herself
I’m in Melbourne, Australia. Received the call about 8.55pm tonight - very pissed off!!! Just got the kids to bed … Anyway, as soon as they said “Free Caribbean Cruise”, I just hung up, googled and found this site. Yes, American accent on recorded message. I hope they rot in hell - I’m on a “Do not call” register.
hetzelfde hier!
SPAM!
fuck die mensen! ik haat dit!
tijdje geleden ook gezien op het NOS journaal dat er dit soort telefoontjes waren.
ik hoop dat ze verbranden in de hel.
als er iets is wat ik haat.. DIT!
Almost exactly two years after I posted this originally, I just got this call again in the Netherlands.
Got the call 22:30 last evening.
Pressed nine - and left the phone off the hook for an hour. After 15 minutes the call had not terminated.
So I can hope that they have to pay something around 15*0,01€ at least.
Got the call 15:50 today, hung up, and then googled and found this site. If I had found it earlier I’d have been tempted to press 9 and leave it off the hook. That or try to sell them a bridge in Brooklyn.
If anyone has done this (the phone thing, not the bridge thing) can you post here so we know that we’re costing them, and it’s not costing us.
I live in Los Angeles, California and just received this call.
Heh, I get these in the middle of the night (between midnight and 3am) occasionally - I live in England.
Hey, i’m from Denmark and got the call at dinner time (around 19:00).
I’ve never encountered this kind of call before so i pressed 9 and got directed to a middleage (by voice) male. I tagged along, knowing that it could easily be a scam. He even got a little upset when i mentioned the fact that i never sign up for contests (hence not winning), and even less for international or website related contests.. He explained that it was a lottery where i automatically sign up whenever i use my credit card in select shops. Well, i guess that makes sense?
He tells me that they selected 100 people to go on a cruise to the Carribean, and that i could bring 4 people with me total. Cool! I’ve won a vacation without even knowing it! (i’m really hangovered so that’ll be my excuse ’cause i’m normally not that stupid)
I give him my card # for verification of my identity, but get suspicious when he wants the exp. date. I then give him the wrong date, thinking that he will see on his computer that its wrong if he is who he claims to be. He continues and wants my name and address, which i give him - but they are both completely wrong and he even cuts me off as i try to correct his spelling mistake. Finally he says “please hold for a minute” and after 20 seconds i hang up.
BTW he was very surprised to learn that i live in Denmark, and he even compliments my first name! Daaamn! Can he use my card # only? or does he need the correct exp. date and name as well??
Thanks!
Oh.. He gives me a couple of websites(when i ask if HE can verify his identity), which he pass as theirs. I remember only part of one: XXXXresort4u or XXXXresortforyou. Something like that.
He had a restricted number, and i believe that the web-address was designed to confuse (in terms of spelling - 4=for, u=you)
Newcastle, NSW Australia. Received the call today, 12:28pm. I answered, was asked to press 9. I stayed on the line for five minutes, then hung up.
Same thing happened to me about an hour ago. I’m from Australia.
Yesterday We had “The funny call” in Denmark too :-(
Just had the same call, at work. I know nothing in this world is for free but I went allong becouse I was curious about his scamming technic. After a few questions, I said I left my card at home and he hang up on me!
I don’t understand that this can work.
Just got the same call. Someone who said you’ve just won a cruise to the caribean. I just hung up.
Funny, yesterday my workwebsite was hacked by redmin who hack the joomla sites and now this sceme.
Ive just received the same offer this is not the first time I just hang up - Lincolnshire UK
Ive just received the same offer this is not the first time I just hang up - Lincolnshire UK
Got the call couple minutes ago.
Telling me to press 9 to claim my prize, of course, I didn’t press it.
DONT PRESS IT, if you are asking yourself for the next time.
Huge scam, which will cost you a lot of money at the end.
If something sounds to unrealistic, then it is the case. Do not forget that! :)
@ 360 (Tobias)
I think to use ur credit card he will need your EXP Date… NOT SURE THROUGH! But I guess I am right, because in the past when I wanted to buy some stuffs on internet I needed to complete the formulary, which asking me for my street adress, name, etc, also my credit card, also the expiration date.. if i had one of those informations false, then it wouldnt work! so i guess you are fine!
Hi, Netherlands here.
Today received this call again. I hung up after the first sentence and didn’t press 9.
Hi, here in DK I just received the same call as others. I just hung up!!!
Just recieved the call here in Denmark. I remembered reading something about these calls before so I hung up straight away. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind that this was fake.
Yeah, they collect cell phone numbers off of myspace and facebook via those fun little applications. You don’t even have to add that junk to your own profile, if they have access to your friends profile, they can see yours. Nothing to worry about really, all you need to do is just hang up. I didn’t even listen past ‘you’ve won a cruise.’ It’s annoying…they called me yesterday and the day before at weird hours, and both times I just missed the call. But they keep at it until you finally pick up some time. And four months later they’ll probably call again or sell your number to some other annoying companies.
Hi,
The same thing for me,i did press 9 because i was very curious, after i guy talked to me “i said, iam not interested,he said”why not?,i answered i was too busy, isaid you have 18 months to go,i reply i just said i was not into it ,he reply what about your mom,i answered she is not into it either, then he started to be angry and got upset and yell at me those words”fuck you” about five times,i asked him where this call is from,no answer just a girl who got on the line to say “hello” then i close the phone, then the guy was not talking so i close the phone, and felt disturb by that phone all night.
be careful!
Just had another call, does anyone know who these people are? ive had 5 calls so far today!!!
Okay….I am used to spam through email, but this is new to me! Got this phonecall just now (hung up, googled a bit and arrived here)
Don’t like this at all…
Hey there - just got the call in Cape Town South Africa!!!
This thing really is going around the world.
I did press nine though, primarily to scream at the operator (a hobby of mine). Unfortunately I never got connected to anyone. Phone rang for awhile followed by dead air, then rang again followed by what sounded like a fast-asleep woman saying, “hello?” I said hello, then I asked who was there then I said hello again - but there was no answer so I hung up.
Go figure.
Hi. Now the scam has reached Norway. My daughter got a call today and she did press 9. She was then connected to a female salesperson who ask if she was interested. My daughter answered no, and the saleperson hung up. That’s it. Time will tell if we are getting even more scam phone calls after this.
just now, ten minutes ago, i got it too. Its all over the world, i live in the netherlands. Hung up, didnt trust it.
#378, haha, nice, I’ll do that next time too!
This is a nice post about book shopping and its a very needed information.
Thanks for such an important post.
Thanks
Just got the call an hour ago… I live in the UK. It hung itself up when I stayed quiet.
Crazy world we live in.
Got this call about 5 minutes ago. Sydney, Australia.
pressed 9. Got a heavy accented american gentleman. He started to babble on and I interrupted him by asking him to put me on the do not call register. He mentioned that it would _COST_ _170 euros_ and that he’d need my credit card to do this. I just laughed and informed him that in america it’s a free service and the company is obliged to comply with my requests. He asked for my “mastercard or visa” without skipping a beat.
I started to ask him questions like: Where is your base of operations. He didn’t answer me so I asked him again. The second time he replied “Orlando, Florida”. I laughed and said it’s pretty weird you’re asking for euro currency in America.
I asked him to place my number on the “Do not call register” and hung up.

Hi there. Just got this call, pressed 9… Uh-oh! Can anyone tell me if this is a premium call scam or a credit card scam please. Someone must know because they’ve been doing this scam for years. Thanks for the help :(
Just got the call, number was not visible at all. First an automated message with a female voice saying I won a free trip, press nice to claim your prize. When I didnt press the message repeated. Then after pressing nine there is a connecting tone… someone picks up. In the background you here the sound of ringing phones and other people talking like an office environment. The man asked me for my VISA Card number. I am asking him who he is. He said he is a VISA Card agent and he needs the creditcard number if I want to claim the prize. I ask his name, he sais his name is Michael James or something. His Agent number is 107QR blahblah… really fast. I ask him where his office is. He sais he is in Texas, Houston Texas… Then I ask him how do you know my number, he sais because I did a purchase with my VISA Card in the past month. Then I tell him that what he is doing is illegal. Do you even know what country you dailed to? He sais… India… I said no you didnt, and for your Information, I am member of a commity that is tracking down people that try to scam over the phone. In this country this is illegal and your phonenumber is being traced as we speak. He sais: Oh really? I said yes, so please turn off your mp3 player with the fake office sounds and make sure your little voice over ip program does never dail any number in this country again!
Then he hung up.
FYI: I am not from India but from Holland, this scamming is illegal everywhere but in Holland we have a watchdog that actually tracks down companies that breaks the colportation laws and I am registred at http://www.infofilter.nl which is supposed to keep such companies away from me.
Unfortunately people like this “Michael” guy are hard to track down… but they are sure easily scared!
just got THE call. I live in The Netherlands.
this is truly an international organization! horrible.
Hi, I have just been called by this robot, at 16.30
I hung up immediately after hearing the robot. I just thought it was just scam.
And i think he called me again at 17.30, but i didn’t answer the phone, because i was to late. (it went over just 3 times). No one else is usually calling me at this moment…
Well here in the UK - two consecutive days… Gosh! This forum is three years old and people are still complaining! Want can we do?????
Has someone here really won the cruise ship holiday? Perhaps we could locate these guys, sue them and we get a compensation of a cruise holiday!!!!
I just received a call 15 minutes ago and I was not thinking and pressed 9. When I heard that they switshed to a english ringing tone,I hung up after some seconds. I just remembered having heard something about this. I then called up my telephone company but they could not see that I had been charged for a big amount off money. So hopefully I was lucky. I am living in Norway.
I actually received this call as well on 31th oct, in the Netherlands. I also hang up immediately after hearing the message, knowing that its ‘too good too be true’.
Seeing that this reflects back too 2005 makes me wonder who’s behind it.
FYI…received this call 15 min. ago in the Netherlands (010).
Obvious scam but i was curious if i could get a person to speak with me, so i could ask some difficult questions. I pressed 9 but nothing happend..what a shame.
yes in august i had exactly the same call! i pressed 9 because i was so curious! then i quickly hang hup! and today a friend of me got the same call! I thought because it was vacation time that it was i call to check if you were at home, so not that you could break in, but now i know it’s just to get a lot of money, son of a bitches
Same here, got phoned 15 minutes ago. Directly hung up after I heard the gal say I won a cruise and had to press 9 to claim my price…
Never buy anything on the phone or at the door…
I just got the phone call while working from home in Australia. I was wondering why an American accented computer was telling me I’d won a trip to the Carribean, that’s on the other side of the world. No one from Australia thinks of the Carribean as a holiday destination, we have Bali and Fiji and Tahiti and French Polynesia a lot closer. Anyway, I pressed nine and it started to ring some number so I hung up quick smart. Was expecting to get racked with a huge international call or a metered number if I stayed on, well I was kind of right I guess. Wish I knew who it was that called.
Just got the same call in Liverpool, UK.
“Caribbean Cruise, press 9″ - I hung up.
Dialed 1471, but they (BT) didn’t have the number to give me.
They (tele-companies) shouldn’t allow calls unless they can give you the number.
And there should be an option when you get a number which says “You were called by ###-######-### today at 19:00 hrs. If this was a scam, press 0 to pass this number to the SAS. A kill team will be dispatched as soon as possible. Thank you.”
I was just called by exactly the same woman and she told me the same thing about the cruise. So weird, I live in Holland but I read someone in Sweden was called as well:O
The same story all over. I see I am number 398 in this website.
The phone rang, the computer voice told me about my Caribean price, and so on. I didn’t trust this, so I didn’t press 9, but just waited for things to happen. It repeated 4 times that I had to press nine and then the computer hang up.
I have won this battle. But what is the trick? Does anyone know? How do they get money out of me?
regards, Hans - Netherlands
Well I just got that phonecall here at my homephone, I live in sweden. Hung up right away, fucking scammers…
If you call them, you CAN be charged with some (unknown amount of) money, because then you have initiated the call.
Either by calling the number you are told if you pressed 9, or by calling the number your telephone shows they called from.
Your telephone operator should be able to remove the possible charge if you explain what happened.
If you wait, and do not press any buttons or say anything (whatever happens), their call will cost THEM as much as possible.
I got the call yesterday, in Sweden. The recording immediately set off my BS-detector, but I know a bit about the phone system and know that I can’t get charged anything just by pressing a button during a call, so I went ahead and pressed nine, and an lovely-sounding American woman said something like “Travel services, may I have your confirmation code please?”
I said, “Um, I don’t have any such thing, I don’t know what this is about.”
“Oh,” she replied, “you must have received a call from us. What number did we call you at?”
At this point I still figured I had nothing to lose, since they clearly already *had* my number. So I played along, told her my phone number, and she pretended to type it into some system, and then said “OK sir, I see here that I am authorized to give you a free 5-day caribbean cruise or a free 4-day stay in Florida. How does that sound?”
It sounded like absolute bullshit. “Sounds great,” I said, “but I live in Sweden and there’s no way I can afford a trip to the US right now just to take your free cruise.”
“Well how about if I pay for half the air-fare?” What a load!
“Sorry, there’s just no way.”
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that sir. Thanks anyway.”
“Oh, you’re welcome”, I said. “By the way, where are you calling from, how did you end up calling me?”
“This is a promotion that anyone with a valid Visa or Mastercard may receive, we give away 200 discounted trips each year.”
Sure, you expect me to believe that Visa and Mastercard run a promotion together?
Anyway, it was a few minutes’ entertainment. If you keep them on the line, they actually have a back-story, and the woman I spoke with was an excellent actress. In spite of the ridiculous nature of what they were “offering”, she sounded completely genuine and earnest all the way through.
Now I hope they call again, I’d like to keep them talking and run up their bill.
Does this call cost money? Has anyone who has pressed 9 been charged for the call? I pressed 9 tonight just because I was curious of what they were going to say. Now I have heard that they may charge your phonebill houndreds of euros if you do.
We get also ten minutes ago a call to claim our price.
The lady that pickup the phone she don’t understand englisch and give the phone to me.
She didn’t press the nine key.
I hangup the phone.
Sorry scammers we don’t like your cruise.
Franc, the netherlands
Same thing here; phone rang about 5 min. ago, picked up and the tape started. Didn’t press 9, it’s quite obvious this is a scam.
Remon
Excellent Post, thanx for sharing the same.. Will keep on reading the post :D Stumbled yourpost .. cheers

Remember that - folks - and then just hang up the phone.
I got the scam call in Denmark just this evening - and a couple of days ago on my cell phone
I’m in Canberra, Australia. I’ve had this phone call a number of times in recent months. I’ve pressed 9 a few times, but usually nothing happens. Once I spoke to a man with an Indian accent and told him I’m on the do-not-call register and he should respect that. He said the call was a result of me electing to receive promotional material from my card provider. I couldn’t argue, because I couldn’t remember which boxes I had ticked. Yesterday I managed to speak to a person again - sounded like the same man. I went along with the spiel, determined to waste as much time as possible, answering questions with conflicting information. When he started homing in on my credit card, I told him that was my business. He finally lost patience with me and told me to f… off. I thought I’d misheard, but then he told me he has a 9-inch cock. I said “Not interested” and hung up. This morning I submitted a report to the ACCC, and then I found this website. I’ll report back if I find I have been charged for the call.
Hi Im from Denmark and i just had the call 5 minutes ago.
Aint it possible to track the origin of the call?
Hi - I’m from London and go exactly the same thing. Being highly cynical I hung up.
Hi - London area - same thing - 5pm 19th January 2009. I could do with a cruise too. Buggers.
hi im from denmark just got the carrabean cruse call 10 minutes ago and pressed nine for laugh it was an american man i spoke to and he wanted 400 euro for taxes after i told him he was an idiot and to pee off he hung up, but i could use the phone for 10 minutes after they some how lock it out and it keeps dialing to another persons number.
Received this call at 09:00 this morning. Am from the UK. Just wondering whether it is to do with the Holiday In Priority Club Reward program as that is the only thing l have signed upto recently
I recieved this call 5 minutes ago… i live in the netherlands. I just hung up.
! !..
Hello. And Bye.
I Received this call just one minute ago. I I thought it was very strange, and I didn’t dare to press 9. I’m 14 years old, and from the netherlands. My first reaction was hanging up! Then I looked up on google for this problem. Noticed more people had this call, I think it’s sad what they’re doing.
.
Well, I just got called as well… I thought it was a friend of ours who lives in the UK so I picked up cheerfully with a: “Good evening!” (faking an Ahmed-the-dead-terrorist voice)
But to no abvail,… the dumb computer just asked me to press 9 again and again and I of course did not.
Is this the new Nigerian “I have an uncle with a lot of money but I need your services”-kinda scam?
Ah well,… whenever you hear this phrase:”Press 9 to claim your price”, just press the end-call button!
Cheers,
Jovcho.
.
My father has been called numerous times. At home and at his business number with about 1-2 months in between.
This is VERY weird.
Luckily I advised my parents not to pressin th 9 key.
Both of the times I listened with them and recognized the voice in both phone calls to be the same female voice.
Greetings,
Marinus - 25 - The Netherlands

I just got the call, thougt I’ll just keep them hanging, but after 59 seconds they ended the call.
I got the call yesterday, and my colleague the day before. The scammers seem to gave found Belgium now. Greetz

I’m from Canada, it’s beent he second time I’ve got it it’s annoying. It was weird at first because I”m from québec …. Usually the calls we get here are in french (I’m french canadian).
I called my company (Vidéotron) and they can’t trace it for me and even there they can’t block it :(
I recieved it too and i’m also from quebec.. I’m with Bell.
My first time ever just 5 minutes ago - my reaction was just like the initiator of this thread : hang up and Google the phrase that was used on the phone. It got me here …
I’m in Belgium, so although we do understand English, it’s not done as a marketing approach.
I’ve seen too many similar scams to go for this kind of rubbish and I can only hope that nobody else falls for this.
great blog. keep up the good work
It occurs to me that if we press the button (1 in my case) and just put the phone to one side then it could be both annoying and costly to them. Even better to act excited and say “hang on, I just need to go and turn the oven off” or something like that. If enough people did this then it could become sufficiently costly and time-consuming that it might no longer be worth their while doing it. As always, we can’t just blame the scammers - blame the fools who fall for it and make it worth their while.
Sth of England. Got the call - a computerised female voice saying I’d won a cruise and to press 1 if I wanted more info. Being curious, I did press 1. Some guy with a very strong voice started talking.
I was 1 of 25 people chosen at random somehow due to my credit card that could win a prize. He asked for my name, which I gave to him (I’m visiting home after my Mum’s funeral), then he asked from a number of credit cards (Visa, Amex, Mastercard etc.), one of which I had.
He asked for the expiry date, which I gave him (I knew no damage could be done so far, but I wanted to see if he had the balls to go the whole hog). He said the card number of 16 characters starts with a 4, and what is mine. I told him 4 as well. He then said what are the full 16 numbers. That’s when I politely told him to EFF OFF and phone someone else. Maybe that latter part wasn’t a good thing to say but obviously he’s going to get onto someone else anyway.
Dialling 1471 to get the callers number didn’t work. There will be ignorant people out there who will fall for this thing. Someone should find them (he was talking in an office, a lot of office noise) and drop a bomb on them all. There’s no excuse for such exploitation from anyone. Bring back the death sentence and get rid of the bar stewards. End of story.
We get calls like this all the time even though we are on a telephone preference register.I don’t know really how you can deal with them,I doubt if leaving them hanging on or simply placing the phone down on its side really works.
I suppose the best thing to do is to simply hang up.
I have had lots of international calls from Calypso Cay offering free cruises - despite being TPS registered. They are a real pest waking up the baby.
Today, I pretended to be interested, giving incorrect but plausable answers to each question for about 30 minutes. Once they had my (incorrect) credit card details, they provided me with a UK freephone number 0800-0910919 to call with any subsequent queries.
If you are getting similar nusisance calls, you might wish to call this (free) number to complain (Numerous times!)
